East Jay girls defeat Indians (01/17/06)

FORT RECOVERY — East Jay’s girls basketball teams had to travel across the state line Monday night. But they brought back a pair of wins.

The Chiefs won a pair of battles against the Fort Recovery Indians, taking the eighth grade game 31-26 and the seventh grade contest 27-17.

East Jay won the eighth grade game on the power of a strong third quarter and a pair of double-digit scoring efforts and.

The teams were tied at 11 at the half before the Chiefs outscored the Indians 13-6 in the third and kept the lead to run their record to 8-0. Pazia Speed (14 points) and Lindsey Wellman (11 points) paced the perfect East Jay squad.

Chelsey Leuthold scored 10 points for Fort Recovery (5-3), and Nicole Pottkotter finished with eight.

Defensive stands lifted the East Jay seventh graders as they allowed just one Indian point in the first quarter and none in the third. By the end of the third period they were up 21-7 on the way to improving to 7-2 on the year.

Cara Garringer paced the Chiefs with seven points, and Brittany Manor scored six.

Nicole Dilworth led Fort Recovery with eight points.

Tribe freshmen fall

ST. HENRY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman boys basketball team missed a chance to claw back to .500 Monday with a 48-34 loss to the St. Henry Redskins.

Matt Braun had 13 points in the defeat, and Brent Faller also reached double figures with 11. Tom Will added six points as the Indians slipped to 3-5.

JC grapplers place 3rd

INDIANAPOLIS — Led by four-time champion Kurt Hess, the Jay County wrestling team finished third with a 3-2 record at the Indianapolis Cathedral Super Duals Saturday.

The Patriots defeated Connersville 65-18, Cincinnati St. Xavier 64-15 and Indianapolis Arlington 57-18 while losing to New Castle 38-32 and the host Fighting Irish 47-18. Cathedral finished in first place.

Jay County’s 19th-ranked Hess, who has now won 27 consecutive matches, defeated No. 18 Gavin McGinley to take his fourth consecutive title at Cathedral at 140 pounds. He was joined by first-time champions Robert Ralston, Bill Spahr and Tom Smith. Also finishing the day with winning records were Nathan Daniels (4-0), Matt Daniels (2-0), Mitchell Martyne (1-0), Ben Theurer (3-2) and Micah Enyart (3-2).

Contest winners crowned

The Portland Morning and Evening Optimist Clubs recently held their Tri-Star basketball contest at East Jay Middle School.

Winning in girls competition were 8-year-old Kali-Li Bruggeman, 10-year-old Abby Dunlavy, 11-year-old Rachelle Jackson, 12-year-old Maria Murphy and 13-year-old Kacey Williams.

Boys champions were 8-year-old Jake Carpenter, 9-year-old Cole Wendel, 10-year-old Jacob Muhlenkamp, 11-year-old Braden Smith-Lykins, 12-year-old Gregory Owen and 13-year-old Skyler Petty.

The winners advance to compete in the zone contest at Jay County High School Feb. 19.[[In-content Ad]]
