EJ boys third at Norwell (09/01/05)

OSSIAN — The East Jay cross country teams opened their seasons Wednesday night with the boys team finishing in third and the girls team in sixth at the Norwell Invitational.

The Chief boys scored 105 points, edging Crestview (112) for third. The host Knights won with 33 points and Carroll was second with 47.

The East Jay girls finished just a point ahead of Adams Central with 131. Carroll took first at 56, Crestview was second (64) and South Adams placed third (86).

Ten teams were represented at the meet, with eight posting team scores in the girls race and seven in the boys.

Tevan Nichols and Patrick Johnson led the boys team, each finishing in the top 10. Nichols was sixth with a time of 11-minutes, 44 seconds, and Johnson was four behind him in 12:01.

Brad Horn and Ben Brandt finished back-to-back in 24th and 25th with times of 12:52 and 12:53 respectively. Adam Daniels completed the team score as he finished 52nd in 14:44.

Leah Wellman was the top runner for the East Jay girls team, placing 11th in 13:54. Hannah Moore led South Adams to its third-place team finish as she crossed the line sixth in 13:40.

The rest of the Chief girls finished in a group at 30th, 31st, 33rd and 35th.

Joni Degler led that pack with a time of 14:39, and Erika Bruggeman was four seconds behind her.

Lindsay Moser was next for East Jay in 14:55, and Mallory Poole followed in 14:57.

In JV action the East Jay girls finished first among four teams with 21 points, and the boys were third in a five-team group with 69.

Katie Simmons won the JV girls race for the Chiefs, finishing in 14:22. LeAnn Horn took second in 14:25.

Renae Rae followed in fourth (15:01), Laura Bowen was fifth (15:04) and Deidre Chenoweth took ninth (15:15).

Austin Bentz was the top runner for the East Jay JV boys team as its top five all finished between 12th and 18th place.

Bentz took 12th in 13:44. He was followed by Garrett Krieg in 14th (14:00), Seth Ainsworth in 15th (14:03), Jacob Heitkamp in 16th (14:21) and Evan Ryder in 18th (14:28).[[In-content Ad]]
