EJ downs Indians to stay undefeated (01/16/04)

Fort Recovery made them sweat for a half, but the East Jay Chiefs still managed to keep their unbeaten streak alive.

The East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team opened its lead in the third quarter on the way to a 34-26 victory over the Indians. Fort Recovery won the seventh grade game 26-20.

In the eighth grade contest Fort Recovery led by three after a quarter, but the Chiefs (9-0) jumped back to take a 19-16 halftime lead. They outscored the Tribe 11-5 in the third period to take control for good.

Abby Loy and Dana Horn shared East Jay scoring honors with nine points apiece. Shelby Rines had seven points and eight rebounds, Katie Runyon scored six points and Casandra Huelskamp grabbed nine rebounds.

The Indians (5-2) got 16 points from Val Fortkamp.

Fort Recovery’s seventh graders improved to 6-1 behind 12 points and 12 rebounds from Anne Koesters. Joanna Snyder had six points, and Kinsey Wenning grabbed seven rebounds.

WJ splits with Eastbrook

Both of West Jay’s boys basketball teams reached the 50-point plateau Thursday night, but it was only good enough for one win. The seventh graders pulled off a 58-51 victory against Eastbrook, but the eighth grade team dropped a 64-50 decision.

The seventh grade team took a 15-7 lead after one quarter and never relinquished it. Ty Fullenkamp scored 20 points, and Blake Price had 14 as the team improved to 8-7 on the year.

The Eagle eighth graders fell behind 18-6 in the first quarter before trying to rally back. They pulled within six at halftime and three after three quarters, but gave up 25 points in the final period.

West Jay (10-5) got 13 points from R.J. Fuller and 12 by Brandon Buckland.

Chiefs win one, lose one

East Jay’s seventh grade boys basketball team slipped to 8-3 with a difficult 47-46 loss to Winchester Thursday. The eighth graders improved to 8-3 as they defeated Winchester 38-31.

Clint Muhlenkamp paced the eighth grade team with 14 points, and Michael Jobe also reached double figures with 10. Joshua Ludy scored seven points for the Chiefs.

Adam Garringer had 13 points for the seventh graders, and Billy Wellman notched 11. Lance Franklin finished with eight points.

Eagles split vs. SA

The West Jay eighth grade girls basketball team rolled over South Adams 35-16 Thursday, but the seventh grade team couldn’t manage any offense in a 27-6 defeat.

The eighth graders outscored South Adams 12-1 in the third quarter to break the game wide open. They are now 7-1 on the season.

Trish Champ finished with a game-high 14 points. Jess Watson followed with nine points, and Miranda Peterson added seven.

The Eagle seventh graders went scoreless in the second quarter and managed just one point in the third. Kelci Reed had three points, Baylea Holdcroft scored two and Alex Bunch added one.

Fort 8th tops Flyers

Fort Recovery’s eighth grade boys basketball team jumped out to a quick lead on the way to a 39-24 win over the Marion Local Flyers Thursday. The seventh grade team (1-6) lost to Marion Local 49-42.

The Indians’ eighth grade team led 17-8 after one quarter, and never gave up the lead. They were up by 13 at halftime and 16 after three quarters on the way to the win.

Clint Tobe led Fort Recovery (5-2) with 10 points and six rebounds. Lucas Staugler had nine points and 10 boards.[[In-content Ad]]
