EJ girls win tourney, still perfect (01/26/04)

East Jay tournament

The East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team was dominant Saturday.

Hosting the East Jay Invitational, the Chiefs clobbered Monroe Central 48-23 and Winchester Driver 41-19 to easily capture the tournament title.

They are a perfect 12-0 thus far this season.

The East Jay seventh graders defeated Yorktown 35-27 in the first round, but dropped the title game 34-18 to Driver.

The Chief eighth graders were never challenged in either contest.

They rolled to a 16-4 advantage after one quarter over Monroe Central, and led by 20 at halftime. They went ahead 12-4 in the first quarter against Driver and kept increasing the lead throughout the 22-point win.

Abby Loy paced the eighth grade team, leading it in scoring in both games with 11 and 15 points respectively. She also had four rebounds against Monroe Central.

Cassandra Huelskamp added eight points and four boards against Monroe Central.

Dana Horn followed with six points, and Amber Edmundson grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Huelskamp trailed Loy with 12 points and five rebounds against Driver. Shelby Rines notched six points and five boards in the title game.

Kaelee Keller had 10 points to pace the seventh grade win over Yorktown. Gina Muhlenkamp and Brittany Mann followed with six points apiece.

Keller, Muhlenkamp and Mann all scored four points against Driver.

Boys 8th wins championship

East Jay’s seventh grade boys basketball team won as the hosts of the East Jay Invitational Saturday. The Chiefs clobbered Hartford City 48-21 in the first round and rolled over Frankton 53-21 in the second.

The East Jay eighth graders were knocked off by Frankton in the opening round 40-29.

Lance Franklin caught fire for the seventh grade squad in the opening round. He scored 23 points — more than the entire Hartford City team — to lead the Chiefs to victory.

Billy Wellman had five points, and Cole Ingram and Dexter Shreve each had four.

Wellman led the Chiefs in the championship game with 14 points as they moved to 11-3 on the season. Adam Garringer had nine points, Franklin posted eight and Shreve notched seven.

The eighth grade team got 10 points from Clint Muhlenkamp and seven by Michael Jobe in its opening-round loss.[[In-content Ad]]
