PORTLAND — Two East Jay teams took titles, and two finished as runners-up as the Chiefs hosted the Boomer basketball tournament Saturday.
The East Jay seventh grade girls stayed perfect on the year as they took the title with wins of 23-15 over Muncie Wilson and 38-35 over Muncie Northside. The eighth grade boys rolled through the first round with a 63-33 annihilation of Muncie Wilson and took the title with a 47-33 victory over Muncie Northside.
The eighth grade girls opened with a 29-16 win over Wilson, but lost the finale 23-15 to Northside. The seventh grade boys made it to the championship game with a 58-45 win over Wilson, but lost to Richmond Dennis 48-39 in the finale.
Lindsey Wellman carried the eighth grade girls (9-0) to the championship, scoring 21 points against Northside. Pazia Speed followed with 10 points.
Wellman also had a game-high of nine points in the win over Wilson, with Speed and Kayla Phillips each chipping in four points.
Billy Wellman led three eighth graders in double figures in the championship game as the Chiefs improved to 10-1 on the season. He scored 15 points, Adam Garringer followed with 11 and Dexter Shreve added 10.
Lance Franklin led a group of 13 scorers for East Jay against Wilson, finishing with 16 points. Kyle Simmons was next with eight points.
Gina Muhlenkamp paced the eighth grade girls with eight points against Wilson. Brittany Mann had six points, and April Roser and Kaelee Keller each added four.
Muhlenkamp, Mann and Kristi Morningstar scored four points each in the loss to Northside.
Eric Homan was the lone seventh grade boy to reach double figures, scoring 22 in the opening game and 14 in the finale. Adam Daniels had eight in the opener for the Chiefs (5-6), and Tyler Freyburger posted seven in the championship.[[In-content Ad]]
