FORT RECOVERY - The battle of the unbeatens went to the Chiefs.

East Jay and Fort Recovery middle schools sent four undefeated teams onto the court Monday, and the visitors came away with a pair of victories. East Jay's seventh grade girls rallied from a seven-point deficit to win 30-29 in overtime, and the eighth graders knocked off the Indians 26-20.

Fort Recovery's seventh graders led by four at halftime, and extended the advantage to 20-13 with just a quarter remaining. But the Chiefs outscored them 14-7 in the final period, then eked out the win in an overtime period dominated by defense.

Janelle Schwieterman led the Indians with nine points in the loss. Chelsea Pottkotter had seven points, and Rachel Rammel grabbed eight rebounds.

Fort Recovery also had the lead in the eighth grade game, up 7-3 after the first quarter and 10-9 at halftime. But East Jay pulled ahead with an 8-3 third quarter and pushed on to the victory.

Kelly Nietfeld paced the Indians with six points, and Olivia Schwieterman added five.

Stats for East Jay's teams, which are both now 7-0, were not available at press time. Both Fort Recovery teams are now 9-1.

Tribe freshmen fall

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery High School freshman boys basketball team is still looking for its first victory after falling 33-21 Monday to the Marion Local Flyers.

Shane Brunswick scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds for the Indians (0-6), who managed just two points in the third quarter. Ryan Link also had seven points, and Elliott Post finished with four points and three boards.

Selma tops Eagles

SELMA - Both West Jay Middle School girls basketball teams were held without a field goal in two quarters Monday in losses to Selma. The seventh grade team lost 29-9 while the eighth grade Eagles fell 40-10.

Shelby Shirk had five points for the seventh graders, who managed just one point in the third quarter and none in the fourth. Taylor Franklin and Audrey Avey each added two points.

West Jay's eighth grade squad went scoreless in the opening half. Paige Alsip and Megan Roush each scored four points.

Chiefs win pair

East Jay Middle School's wrestling team won two out of its three matches Saturday, topping Muncie Wilson 69-16 and Fort Wayne Blackhawk 78-22. It lost to Bellmont, 46-39.

Three Chiefs - Cory Bellis (85), Austin Bentz (110) and Matt Taylor (160) - were perfect in all three matches. Bentz scored each of his wins by pin.

Conner Ray (75) and Nathan Frisch (152) each went 2-0.

East Jay also defeated Muncie Northside 78-12 Thursday, with Justin Wygant (145) scoring the fastest pin in 19 seconds.[[In-content Ad]]
