Evans and Rigby win another (10/07/04)

Jay County Roundup

PERU — Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby expected to be playing the Mississinewa Indians. It’s just happening about a week later than they thought it would.

Jay County’s boys tennis No. 1 doubles team advanced once more in the individual doubles tournament Wednesday, knocking off Craig Craun and Nick Hentgen of Wabash 6-4, 6-0.

The victory earned Evans and Rigby a match against the Indians’ Tyler Click and Scott Schuler.

Mississinewa would have been the Patriots’ foe in last week’s team sectional championship match, but they got upset in the semifinals by Blackford. The doubles teams will play today at Mississinewa at 4 p.m.

The Indians, who won a second straight sectional title at Marion this season, were eliminated from team tournament play Wednesday.

The Patriot pair, which won eight of its final nine games for its win over Northwestern Tuesday, followed much the same path against Wabash. With the first set tied at 4-4, Evans and Rigby won eight consecutive games to take the victory.

While they did not play Mississinewa this year, Evans and Rigby lost to Schuler and then-partner Scott Mellor 6-3, 6-1 in last season’s team sectional championship match. Click played No. 2 doubles for the Indians last year.
