Evans, Rigby advance to doubles state (10/17/05)

JCHS boys tennis

INDIANAPOLIS — Three sets? No problem.

Tiebreaker? They’ve been there before.

Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby handled everything that was throw at them Saturday, winning a pair of matches in regional action at Indianapolis North Central. Jay County’s No. 1 doubles duo defeated Anderson 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) in the opening round and topped Lebanon 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) later in the day to earn a berth in the state finals.

They have gone to three sets in each of their last four tournament matches, all victories. And they have played three tiebreakers during that span, winning them all.

They will join seven other teams — from Providence, Heritage Christian, Plymouth, Indianapolis Brebeuf, Center Grove, LaPorte and Terre Haute South — in the state finals beginning Friday at 2 p.m. at Indianapolis Park Tudor. The four winning teams from Friday’s matches will play Saturday at 10 a.m. with the state championship to follow at 2 p.m.

Evans and Rigby traded 6-4 scores in the opening two sets of their second match Saturday against Lebanon’s Greg Milam and Brad Mustin. Neither team ever had more than a one-game lead in the third and final set, leading to a tiebreaker.

Milam and Mustin grabbed a 4-2 lead, but the Patriots rallied to pull even at six. With one team needing just two points for victory Milam made an error and Rigby secured a Jay County state berth with an overhead winner.

The win served as a bit of vengeance for Evans and Rigby, who dropped out of last year’s tournament in their opening regional match 6-4, 6-3 to then-seniors Joseph Swanson and Benjamin Hinds of Lebanon.

Evans and Rigby set a school record with their pair of regional wins. At 22-3 on the season they have won more matches in a single season than any players in school history.

They will also be the first players in Jay County history to make an appearance in the state finals. They have not lost in nearly a month with their last defeat coming Sept. 20 against Delta.

The opening match Saturday was just as tight as the win over Lebanon as the Patriots dropped their first five games and lost the first set 6-2 to Anderson’s Johnathan Fogle and Richard Hiatt. They trailed 2-0 in the second set before finally coming alive to pull even at 5-5 and win the next two games to force a third set.

Evans and Rigby finally grabbed an advantage, 3-0, in the third set, only to have Anderson force a tiebreaker. The teams split the first two points, but the Patriots followed with five in a row and went on to win 7-2 to earn their match against Lebanon.[[In-content Ad]]
