Victory was within reach for the Jay County High School boys tennis team Thursday, but it fell short in the three-set deciding match. The Patriots slipped to 3-11 on the season with a 3-2 loss to the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.
The match came down to the battle at No. 1 doubles, where Patriots Chance Fuller and Joe Imel grabbed the early lead with a first-set victory over Jacob Hart and Reny Keener. But they failed to close out the match in a close second set and then fell behind 3-0 in the third on the way to a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 defeat.
Jordan McBride and Drew Wood rolled to victory at No. 2 doubles, cruising past Daniel Wallace and Terry Ogle 6-3, 6-1.
Derek Smith earned the other win for JCHS, fighting through a pair of close sets to beat Dalton Kramer 6-4, 7-5. He improved his record to 6-8 on the season, the best on the team.
Brad Leuthold played a close first set at No. 1 singles before fading to a 7-5, 6-0 loss to Quenton Fair, and Landry Inman lost 6-2, 7-5 to Gavin Cox at No. 3 singles.
