Neal Fennig topped the list of winners Sunday at the Jay County Summer Swim Team’s awards ceremony.
Fennig, who graduated from Jay County High School last month, was selected as the Jacqui Baxter Sportsmanship and Team Leadership Award. The 2011 state finalist in the 200-meter freestyle was also the high-point swimmer in the 15-and-older boys division.
Ashlyn Dow picked up the Most Improved Swimmer Award while Avery Vormohr was selected as Rookie of the Year.
Joining Fennig in earning high point honors in the boys age groups were Lance McCowan (8-and-younger), Tayler Smeltzer (9-10-year-old), Ian Reynolds (11-12-year-old) and Sok Vormohr (13-14-year-old). Girls high-point awards went to Eliza Bader (8-and-younger), Kaitlyn Dow (9-10), Alex Bader (11-12), Anne Vormohr (13-14) and Eme Miller (15-and-older).

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Four members of the Jay County High School cheerleading squad were honored following the Universal Cheerleader’s Association camp July 15-18 at the University of Kentucky.
Patriot seniors Darian Barnett, Mollie May, Shelby Pryor and Krista Taylor were selected as All-Americans. Barnett was also invited to try out to be a UCA instructor next year.
Jay County also finished third in the cheer category and fifth overall in the camp championships. The squad earned blue ribbons and the spirit stick award daily at the camp, which included groups from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia.
Members of the squad along with the All-Americans are seniors Lyndee Evans, Nikka Chaney and Nachelle Miller; juniors Makayla Jobe, Alexis Cook, Jenna Barber and Lauren Runkle; and sophomores Olivia Cash, Ericka Reynolds and Rachel Vogler.
Ferner leads win
Brandon Ferner scored the game-winning run Monday to lead Portland Kiwanis to a 15-14 Portland Junior League Junior Rockets baseball victory over Local 1620.
Kiwanis rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings before falling behind by two again in the top of the eighth. Runs by Taylor Fugiett and Nathan Frisch evened the scored, and Ferner, who had hits in each of his final three at bats, scored the game-winner on a single by Brody Speed.
Dustin Fields paced the Kiwanis offense with three hits, three runs and an RBI. Drue Armstrong had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Ferner scored three times.
