Field success carries FR boys (03/31/04)

Fort Recovery’s middle school boys track team dominated Tuesday’s field events to open the year with wins over Franklin Monroe and Fairlawn with 78 points. The girls team also owned the throwing events, but had to settle for third with 29 points.

Franklin Monroe won the girls competition with 77 points and was second to the Indians in the boys with 60 points. Fairlawn was second in the girls standings with 39 points, and third in the boys with 18.

Matt Vagedes and Luke Bihn led the way as the Tribe boys swept the field events.

Vagedes had a trio of victories, his closest coming in the high jump. He won at 1.25 meters, just ahead of Bill Taylor of Franklin Monroe at 1.24 meters.

He was also first in the pole vault at 2.13 meters, and finished ahead of teammate Austin Burkthard in the long jump with a leap of 4.59 meters.

Bihn had a pair of first-place finishes, but had even more Indians lined up behind him.

He won the shot put at 12.83 meters, with teammates Lucas Staugler, Alex Gehle, Chuck Shier and John Westgerdes in the next four positions. Bihn also won the discus with a toss of 33.53 feet, followed by Shier, Ben Hemmelgarn and Staugler.

Other wins from the boys came from Zac Schoenherr in the 400-meter dash (58.4 seconds) and Michael Trobridge in the 100-meter dash (13.14). Trobridge was followed by Jeremy Schmitz.

Anne Koesters picked up one of the two victories for the girls team, taking the shot put at 7.64 meters with teammate Paige Watkins in second. Watkins added the other win in the discus with a throw of 20.45 meters, and fellow Indian Kris Willmann was second.

Baseball tryouts

Tryouts for the East Jay Middle School baseball team will be held at the JCHS gym today and Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Players should plan to attend both tryout sessions. Students must be in sixth, seventh or eight grade to participate.

Geneva baseball

Registration for the Geneva youth baseball league will be Saturday at the Geneva VFW Hall from noon to 3 p.m.

Tee ball and minor league baseball are from those ages 5 through 8, and Little League baseball is for ages 9 through 12. The registration fee is $15.
