VALPARAISO — One of the top teams in the state dominated everyone Saturday, but Jay County faired quite well among the rest of the group.
The Patriots finished third at the eight-team Valparaiso Invitational Saturday, scoring 99.05 points.
The host Vikings, who were the state runners-up last season, placed four gymnasts in the top six of three events and cruised to victory with 109.175 points. New Castle barely edged Jay County with a 99.65.
Senior Melissa Fifer had a break-out day on the vault to help lead Jay County. Performing a Tsukahara for the first time in competition without a spotter, Fifer nailed it for a career-best 9.1.
She finished second in the event to Valparaiso’s Katelyn Skinner, posting the best result of any Patriot on the day. The score also placed her fourth on Jay County’s all-time list.
Junior Hannah Williams was the only other Patriot to score in the top six in any event, following Fifer on the vault with an 8.95 for fifth place. Vault was the only event in which the Vikings did not have four athletes in the top six.
Williams added another fifth-place finish with a matching 8.95 in the floor exercise. She was sixth with an 8.8 on the balance beam and 10th with a 7.7 on the uneven bars.
She finished third in the all-around competition with a 34.40.
Fifer was 10th on the balance beam with an 8.3 and 16th on the floor with an 8.25.
Lacey Thornburg was the only other Patriot to score in more than one event. She was 13th on the bars with a 7.3 and 15th on the vault with an 8.3.
Also scoring for Jay County were: Caitlin Dunn, 18th, 8.05 on the floor; Erika Hunt, 12th, 8.225 on the balance beam; and Makenzie Knight, 15th, 7.125 on the bars.[[In-content Ad]]
