MUNCIE - After a full week off, the Patriots had to settle for a tie.

The Jay County High School girls soccer team took the lead midway through the second half Wednesday, but the host Delta Eagles came back to forge a 2-2 tie.

"Considering that we didn't play at all last week, there were times that I was pleased with what we did," said JCHS coach Sue Rager, whose team's scheduled game Sept. 27 at Muncie Central was not played because officials were a no-show. "I'm disappointed in the result, but I think we had some nice play."

The Patriots (5-6-1) held the lead twice in the contest, but only briefly.

They pushed ahead in the first half only to have Delta score the tying goal less than two minutes later. Then Pazia Speed put the Patriots in position for the win in the second half.

There was a battle for the ball on the left side that sent both Tricia Skiver of JCHS and her Eagle counterpart to the ground. Speed came out of the scrum with the ball, pushed down the left side of the field and sent a laser past goalie Maggie Dely for a 2-1 lead with 17:19 on the clock.

Delta needed more than two minutes to even the score in the second half, but not by much as it got an opportunity when the Patriots were called for tripping at the 12:19 mark. The result was a free kick for the Eagles just outside the 18-yard box, and Lindsay Moore converted with a high shot out of the reach of goalie Abby Loy.

"She's been clutch for us all year. She's a senior captain," said Delta coach Lance Engle, whose team is now 5-8-3.

"I called her number. She hadn't missed all year, so it was a no-brainer. I knew she was going to hit it."

Both teams had opportunities late in the game, but neither could break the deadlock.

The best of those chances came off a Loryn Horn throw-in to Cassandra Huelskamp from the left side. Huelskamp split a pair of Delta defenders with a quick tap to Pazia Speed, who then made a break for the goal. Her attempt glanced off Dely, and Dana Horn crashed in to follow the shot but the ball eventually rolled wide right to end the threat.

The Eagles finished with one more shot on goal than JCHS - 11-10 - and both took seven attempts in the second half. Speed led the Patriots with four shots on goal, and Huelskamp and Brianne Wellman each added three. Moore powered Delta with three.

"The girls had the opportunities," said Rager, "they just were unable to finish when we had the ball and we could have scored.

"(The Eagles) came out stronger in the second half. ... We tried to make some adjustments in our lineup, but we still have some things to work on before sectional."

Jay County will play its sectional opener at Marion Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Eastern. The team will need a victory to give itself a chance to avoid the program's first sub-.500 season since going 7-10-3 in 1999.

"Eastern is going to be a tough game," said Rager. "Any game in sectional is always a tough game.

"We need to come ready to play."

The first goal for the Patriots against Delta came as Kaelee Keller won the ball off a throw-in from the left side. She worked to the middle of the field before passing ahead to Wellman, who dribbled toward the left post and then sent a grounder to the right corner for the 1-0 advantage.

Wellman's tally came with 31:04 on the clock, and less than two more minutes ran off before Delta evened the game.

The game-tying for the Eagles came off a throw-in from the right side as freshman Kayliegh West took control. She worked up the middle of the field before finding Dorothy Clements wide open on the left side. Unchallenged by the defense, Clements hammered a shot that deflected off Loy's hand and to the right corner to tie the game at the 29:23 mark.

"She was just wide open and called for it," said Engle. "They got it to her and she put it in. That's what it takes to win games.

"I thought both teams played really well. Both teams had really good opportunities, it was just who was going to capitalize first, and both teams capitalized twice. That's just the way it went. I thought both teams played really hard."[[In-content Ad]]
