First Merchants avenges in tourney

First Merchants was finally able to topple Brewster Electric.
It was a bonus that the first win over the Portland Junior League Rookie girls rival came in the tournament as First Merchants avenged four regular season losses with a 17-16 victory.
First Merchants trailed 15-14 going into the top of the sixth, but scored three times to take a lead heading into the bottom of the inning. Brewster Electric closed within one but First Merchants was able to get a strikeout and induce two ground balls back to the pitcher to end it and claim the win.
Tricia Ison smacked an inside-the-park home run for First Merchants in the first inning and scored twice to key her team. Rieley Brewster led Brewster Electric with a double, triple, and inside-the-park home run and eight RBIs for Brewster Electric.
In other tournament action, Jay County REMC downed Portland Optimist 19-11.
Destiny McManus had a single, two doubles and an inside-the-park home, totaling five RBIs to lead REMC. Hilary Cox drove in four runs and had two doubles for Portland Optimist.

DUNKIRK — The Tigers came with the upset.
The winless Tigers nabbed their first victory, taking down the then undefeated Lions 3-1 in West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer action Saturday.
Kaylee Denney scored twice and Lucian McIntire punched in a goal to get the Tigers out front 3-0 before the half. The Lions were unable to respond as Matt Paquette netted the only goal for his team as it suffered its first loss.
In other games, the Squidz took down the Whales 8-4 led Ben Crouch with six goals.
The Sting Rays remained undefeated by downing the winless Sharks 14-3. Maddox Huffman scored 13 times, including five goals in the fourth quarter.
The Hurricanes edged the Twisters 6-2. Ian Ruiz scored five goals for the Hurricanes.
The Lightning shut out the Thunder 5-0. Gabriela Bilbrey notched three goals and Sophia Fugiett put in two in the victory.
And the Cheetahs outlasted the Jaguars 5-3. Danuel Fugiett scored three goals for the Cheetahs while Leigha Stachler kicked in all three for the Jaguars.[[In-content Ad]]
