Ford elected to lead IHSAA board

INDIANAPOLIS — Phil Ford will be leading the IHSAA Board of Directors again.
The Jay County High School principal and former athletics director was elected Monday as president of the Indiana High School Athletic Association Board of Directors for the 2012-13 school year.
“This is an honor and I’m grateful that my colleagues on the board elected me,” said Ford this morning.
Ford also served as president of the IHSAA Board during the 2009-10 school year. His current term on the board runs through 2014.
Blue River’s Ken Howell was elected as vice president. Nancy Alspaugh of Manchester was voted as chairperson of the executive committee, and Victor Bush of Indianapolis Public Schools was elected vice chairperson.

Students honored
FORT RECOVERY — Four Fort Recovery students were honored Monday with Ohio High School Athletic Association awards at the school’s academic banquet.
Ericka Lennartz and Jason Pottkotter received the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award, and Olivia Schwieterman and Jared Kahlig earned the OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award.
The sportsmanship award goes to students “who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship and display ethics and integrity in their school and community.”
The scholar athlete honor goes to students who earn at least four varsity letters and have the highest grade point average. Kahlig has eight varsity letters and a 4.0 GPA, and Schwieterman has five varsity letters and a 3.99 GPA.

Ten take first
Portland’s Judan Judo had 10 first-place finishers Saturday as it took second out of 30 clubs at the Indiana State Judo Championships at Jay County High School.
Earning top honors for Judan at the tournament that included nearly 250 competitors from four states were Adam Wilhelm, Kaden Steed, Cameron Smitley, Flint Schmiesing, Elijah Stammen, Abigale Heath, Nathan Fodrea, Amanda Buell, Zackary Wilhelm and Shaely Dennis.
Second-place efforts came from Cody Rowles, Crosby Heniser, Spencer Patterson, Allen Mast, Sophia Sprunger, Monte Schmiesing and Abigale Weaver. Austin Pyle, Brayden Sprunger, Nichol Kunkler, Wyatt Kunkler, Sheldon Minch, Ethan Dennis and Spencer Patterson placed third.[[In-content Ad]]
