Former Rocket to take over at Charleston Southern (09/04/04)

Former Portland Rockets Jason Murray has gotten his big break.

Murray, 30, was selected this week to become the new head baseball coach at Charleston Southern University. He is the eighth coach in the program’s 38-year history.

In addition to playing for the Rockets, Murray played shortstop at Ball State. He was a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 1997, when he hit .425.

The Bluffton High School graduate was an assistant at the University of Michigan before being chosen by Charleston Southern. He has also coached at Florida, Winthrop, Rio Hondo and Ball State.

Tribe takes pair

GREENVILLE, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s junior high volleyball teams each came away with wins Thursday over the Greenville Green Wave. The eighth grade team improved to 2-0 with a 25-14, 25-20 win while the seventh grade team picked up its first victory by a 25-20, 21-25, 15-9 score.

Chelsea Klenke paced the eighth grade team with 11 points and five assists. Rachel Tobe had 10 points, and Kelsey Wuebker put up six assists.

Kinsey Wenning had team highs of three kills, two blocks and two digs.

In seventh grade action Nicole Pottkotter scored 19 points and had a pair of kills. Lorraine Shier had a team-best three kills, and Sylvia Schwieterman added two.

Josie Guggenbiller scored 10 points, Carly Staugler had two assists and Emily May finished with two digs.

Roessner third

Fort Recovery’s Tina Roessner turned in a third-place finish at the Junior High Mercer County Cross Country Invitational Tuesday. Amber Heitkamp was seventh, and Andrea Faller placed 22nd.

Community Center

The Jay Community Center is bringing back the Coroporate Challenge this year, but with a different name.

The 2004 Fall Fitness Challenge will begin Saturday, Oct. 9. Teams will compete in 11 events — golf, bowling, softball, timed walk, down-on-the-farm relay, volleyball, badminton, 5K, basketball shooting, basketball 3-on-3 and table tennis — over the course of nine days, completing competition Sunday, Oct. 17.

The registration fee is $20 per participant and the deadline for teams to register is Friday, Sept. 24. Team packets are available at the community center.

The community center is also offering aerobics and yoga classes, which will begin Monday, Sept. 13.

Aerobics classes with instructor Robin Segraves will be held Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. Yoga classes will be on Mondays from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. with instructor Paul Vesperry.

The registration fee is $30.

Golf outing

The Randolph County YMCA and St. Vincent Randolph Hospital will host the YMCA/St. Vincent Open Sunday, Oct. 3 at Winchester Golf Club.

There will be prizes for the winning teams as well as special contests throughout the day. The cost to enter is $40.

5-on-5 tourney

The Parlor City 5-on-5 basketball tournament will be Saturday, Sept. 25 at Bluffton High School.

The tournament is for anyone 18-and-older who has finished high school. Prizes will be awarded to the top two teams, and the registration fee is $175 per team.
