Fort grads part of big seasons (01/07/06)

Collegiate Check-up

Midway through the 2005-06 campaign teams basketball teams boasting Fort Recovery graduates have very little to complain about.

Capital University, home of 2002 FRHS grad Sara Heitkamp, is 11-1 and ranked 11th in the NCAA’s Division III. The University of Findlay, where 2003 Fort Recovery graduate Tyler Niekamp now resides, is No. 25 in Division two and has won seven in a row after a 4-3 start.

Heitkamp has led the Crusader juggernaut throughout the season, and the team’s most recent game was no different. With the game against host John Carroll knotted at 25, Heitkamp scored six of her game-high 33 points in a 9-0 run to give Capital a lead it would never relinquish.

The senior racked up her scoring total on 14-of-19 from the field. She added seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

She also had seven points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals in the Crusaders’ 73-41 destruction of Bethany Tuesday.

Heitkamp is first on the team in scoring (17.5 points per game), steals (52) and assists (47) this season.

Niekamp scored all of his five points against Cal-State San Bernadino in overtime, helping the Oilers to a 69-66 victory in the Grand Canyon Classic championship game in Phoenix Dec. 30. He also had two rebounds and four assists in the victory.

The redshirt sophomore also had four rebounds and three points as Findlay topped Mercyhurst 73-43 Thursday.[[In-content Ad]]
