Fort opens sectional against Rangers (04/30/04)

Fort Recovery Roundup

For the Indians, sectional time has already arrived.

The Fort Recovery baseball team will open sectional play tomorrow against the New Knoxville Rangers at noon in the first of two tournament games at Minster.

The Indians (6-10) head into the contest as a slight favorite, having defeated New Knoxville 7-5 on April 19.

The other first-round contest pits Marion Local against Waynesfield-Goshen at 2:30 p.m.

Sectional championship games at Minster will be played Saturday, May 8, with the Fort Recovery/New Knoxville winner taking on second-seeded Minster at noon. Top-seeded New Bremen will play the Marion Local/Waynesfield-Goshen victor at 2:30 p.m.

Fort Recovery’s softball team also will have a rematch — on several levels — when it takes to the field at the New Bremen sectional.

The Indians were selected as the No. 1 seed for the first time in school history, and earned a bye to the championship round. They will take on the St. Henry Redskins — which also got a first-round bye — Monday, May 10 at 5 p.m.

The Tribe defeated St. Henry 2-1 on April 19 this season. However, the Redskins beat second-seeded Fort Recovery in last year’s sectional tournament after losing the regular-season contest.

On the other side of the bracket, Marion Local will meet Minster in first-round action at New Bremen Monday, May 3 at 5 p.m. The winner of that contest will play the second-seeded host Cardinals for a sectional title Wednesday, May 12 at 5 p.m.

Cards top Tribe

In what could be a district semifinal preview, the Fort Recovery softball team dropped its first Midwest Athletic Conference game 4-3 to the New Bremen Cardinals.

New Bremen took a quick lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and one in the second against Indian starter Julie Smith. It added another in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.

The Tribe (11-5, 2-1 MAC) — which picked up the No. 1 seed in the New Bremen sectional ahead of the host Cardinals — scored three times in the sixth inning, but couldn’t finish the comeback.

Smith (7-2) took the defeat, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits in four innings. She struck out two and walked three.

Alyssa Tobe struck out one and allowed one walk in two scoreless innings of relief.

Lisa Grisez singled, scored a run and had an RBI, and Krystal Rammel had a double and an RBI.

Jenny Lauber notched a single and a run, and Smith had the only other hit for the Indians.

Fort Recovery plays again today at Jay County at 5:30 p.m.

Fort JV falls

Sandra Sudhoff and Kristen Schwieterman managed to get the bat on the ball. They just didn’t get much help.

Sudhoff and Schwieterman accounted for all four Indian hits and all three RBIs as the Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team lost to the New Bremen Cardinals Thursday 7-3.

Tiff Gaerke suffered the defeat for the Indians (4-5), allowing seven runs — two earned — on four hits. She struck out five and walked two.

Both of Sudhoff’s hits went for extra bases as she ripped a double and a triple. She drove in a pair of runs and scored once.

Schwieterman knocked a pair of singles and added one RBI. Gaerke and Lauren Wenning each scored once.

Indians still winless

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity baseball team came on late, but still lost by a 7-3 decision to Jay County.

The Tribe scored all of its three runs in the final three innings. It fell to 0-11 with the defeat.

Jay County built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the third and one in the fourth and went on to the victory.

Kevin Schoenherr was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs — four earned — on 12 hits. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

David Schmitt singled and scored a run, and Scott Hein added a double. Craig Garman and Aaron Metzger scored the other two Indian runs after reaching base on walks.[[In-content Ad]]
