Fort Recovery shoots down No. 10 Flyers (10/03/03)

Fort volleyball

The Tribe has been close in its matches against top teams this year. This time, the Indians decided close wasn’t good enough.

Fort Recovery’s volleyball team rallied on the road from a game-one defeat to knock off the Division IV No. 10 Marion Local Flyers 13-15, 15-13, 16-14. The win improved the Indians to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

The match was a great one all around, with game three being tied at 10, 11, 13 and 14 before finally being decided. The Tribe even had a 13-11 lead, only to watch Marion Local pull back ahead 14-13.

The Indians earned a side out on a Briget Metzger kill, but that would not be the 6-foot-3 senior’s biggest swing of the game. With Joscie Kaup serving, Mandy Hartings of the Flyers hit an attack out of bounds, and Marion Local was called for a carry on the next point to put Fort Recovery up 15-14.

The ball went over the net several times before Metzger hit her biggest shot. Kaup set her up in the middle and Metzger sent the ball to the floor for the resounding final point in the upset.

Metzger finished a tremendous match with 13 kills and 14 blocks.

The Indians won the second game, but had a rough time doing it.

They built a 10-point lead only to have the Flyers come back for a 13-13 tie.

Still the Tribe held on as Joscie Kaup served the final two points — her first two of the match after being shut out in game one — with freshman Tiff Gaerke forcing a third game with back-to-back kills.

Kaup scored nine points in the final two games. She also had nine kills, 16 digs and 32 assists in the match.

Julie Grube added eight kills, eight points and 12 digs in the Tribe victory. Renee Schmackers scored a team-best 12 points, Gaerke had eight blocks, and Jenn Stahl put away seven blocks.

The Indians will face another incredible challenge Tuesday when they host the Division IV No. 1 St. Henry Redskins at 6 p.m.
