Fort Recovery wins 6th straight (02/13/04)

With their winning streak on the line the Indians didn’t even give Versailles a glimmer of hope.

The Fort Recovery girls basketball team exploded to a 19-5 lead after one quarter on the way to a 61-31 destruction of the host Versailles Tigers Thursday.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Indians, who are now 13-6 overall and 6-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference after opening the season 2-5. They have won 11 of their last 12 games, with the lone loss coming to then-Division IV No. 3 Marion Local.

Fort Recovery will have every opportunity to extend the streak when its hosts Coldwater Thursday at 6 p.m. The Cavaliers are currently mired at the bottom of the MAC, sitting at 3-15 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

Senior Joscie Kaup lit up the Tigers, shooting 9-of-15 for a game-high 23 points. She also had three assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Freshman Holly Stein shot 50 percent from the field (4-of-8) and finished with 13 points. She went 2-of-3 from 3-point range, bumping her season 3-point mark to 48 percent.

Stein shared team-high marks with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Krystal Rammel had seven points and seven rebounds, and Vicki Roessner had six points and five assists.

Versailles (5-13, 1-7 MAC) stuck with the Indians in the second quarter before the visitors turned it on again. Fort Recovery shot 54 percent in the second half and for a 32-14 advantage after the break.

The Tigers managed just 32 percent for the game, with Rachel Schmitz scoring 10 points. She also had two assists.

Lynette Stauffer had six rebounds and one block.

Fort JV falls short

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity girls basketball team trailed by 12 points at halftime, and just missed completing the comeback in a 34-33 loss to the Versailles Tigers Thursday.

The Indians outscored Versailles 12-7 in the final period, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit. They shot just 2-of-6 from the foul line compared to 9-of-16 for the Tigers.

Jennalee Post had eight points and eight rebounds to pace Fort Recovery. Julie Link scored seven points, and Kelsie Will finished with six.

Will also had five rebounds, Link notched four steals and Renee Evers finished with four assists.

Stacey Reed and Caitlin Liette each had eight points for Versailles. Liette added three steals, Laura Grilliot grabbed five rebounds and Susan Brown dished out three assists.

SA 2nd in three-way meet

South Adams managed just two event wins, but still finished second with 98 points Thursday in a three-way meet with East Noble and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.

East Noble won the meet with 115 points, and Luers was third with 75.

The Starfire wins came back-to-back, with Andy Lehman and Carson Sprunger coming through late in the meet.

Lehman grabbed his victory in the 100-yard backstroke in 1-minute, 8.86 seconds. Sprunger followed him with a victory in the next race, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.81.

South Adams is off for a week before competing in the preliminary round of the Jay County sectional Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Tribe advances

Fort Recovery’s eighth grade boys basketball team rolled through the first round of the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament with a 50-33 stomping of New Knoxville Thursday.

Clint Tobe went scoreless in the first period, but finished with a game-high 17 points. Bobby Rammel followed with 11 points, and Mike Trobridge added seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
