Fort tourney opens Saturday

The Fort Recovery High School baseball team will open tournament play Saturday, while the Tribe softball team got a first-round bye.
In the tournament brackets released Sunday, FRHS plays New Knoxville in the opening round of the Division IV Minster baseball sectional Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The softball team’s first tournament game will be May 10, when they take on either Parkway or Lima Central Catholic for the Division III Elida sectional title.
The defending sectional champion Tribe softball team (8-9) got a first-round bye along with Paulding. First round games for the Elida tournament will pit Coldwater against Liberty-Benton Saturday at 11 a.m. with Parkway and LCC to follow.
The winner of the first game will play Paulding for a sectional title Monday at 5 p.m., and the LCC/Parkway winner will take on Fort Recovery May 10 at 5 p.m. The champions will advance to the district hosted by Bath.
At Minster, Fort Recovery (2-11) will play New Knoxville (8-3) in the second opening round game after Marion Local (8-5) battles New Bremen (3-8) on Saturday at 11 a.m. The winners will play in sectional championship games May 11 against Minster (12-7) and Parkway (8-3) respectively for the right to advance to the Coldwater district.

SA tennis falls
NEW HAVEN — South Adams’ girls tennis team fell to 1-10 Monday with a 4-1 loss to the New Haven Bulldogs.
Lindsey Graber and Kassy Potts rallied from an opening-set loss to defeat Chekea Jacquay and Megan Calvert 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. In the other doubles match, Alex Fox and Mallory Eicher fell 6-1, 6-3 to Morgan Tracey and Jessica Calvert.
Aine O’Donnell dropped the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1 to Amber Knueve. At No. 2 singles Holly Taylor lost 6-1, 6-0 to Courtney Louden, and at No. 3 singles Tiffany Yoder fell 6-0, 6-1 to Kiersten Perkins.
The junior varsity squad lost 5-1 with the lone victory coming from Fait VonGunten and Megan Hreha at No. 3 doubles.

Tribe seniors honored
FORT RECOVERY — Ryan Heitkamp received a pair of athletic honors at Monday’s Fort Recovery academic awards banquet.
Nicole Dilworth and Heitkamp were named the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award winners, and Holly Brunswick and Heitkamp were recognized as OHSAA scholar athletes.
The sportsmanship award goes to “students who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship, display ethics and integrity as a student athlete in their school and community. The scholar athlete award goes to the senior boy and girl who have the highest scholastic average among those with at least four varsity letters. Brunswick earned nine varsity letters and carries a 4.0 grand point average, and Heitkamp earned seven varsity letters and has a 3.6 GPA.
Picking up the Big P Letterman Award, in honor of former FRHS public address announcer Paul Staugler, were Kendra Brunswick, Olivia Thien, Abby Huelskamp, Alexis Sutter and Holly Brunswick.The award goes to athletes who have earned at least eight varsity letters or who have competed in three sports during all four years of high school and earned at least six varsity letters.

Houck wins three
Malarie Houck won three events Monday to lead the East Jay Middle School girls track team to a 74-26 win over visiting Blackford. The Chief boys also won, 72-28.
Houck was the only EJMS athlete to win multiple events, taking first place in the hurdles in 17 seconds flat. She also took the 200 dash in 28.5 and the long jump at 15 feet, ½ inch.
Michael Vanover won the 400 dash for the boys team in 1 minute, 9.7 seconds, Alex Abbott took the 800 run in 2:38.1 and Jalen Ryder was first in the 1,600 run in 5:50. Other victories for the boys team came from Ian Bentz (hurdles), Logan Antrim (shot put) and Will Rowles (high jump).
Adding victories for the girls team were Lexie Myers (100 dash), Emi Minnich (1,600 run), Ava Kunkler (400 dash), Hannah Lykins (shot put) and Rhianon Mills (discus).
The East Jay girls B team won 85-12 while the boys B team won 77-9.

Star boys fourth
PONETO — South Adams Middle School’s boys track team placed fourth with 61 points at Monday’s Southern Wells Relays.
The host Raiders won by one point over Adams Central with 123. Bluffton was third with 93, and West Jay finished two points behind the Starfires in the five-team event.
Josh Crider joined Skylar Schoch, Isaiah Amstutz, and Boaz Marbach for second in the sprint medley in 2 minutes, 7.3 seconds, and also teamed with Drew LeFever, Daniel McLaughlin and Conner Sealscott for a runner-up effort in the 4x200 relay in 2:07.8.
Derek Wanner was third in the high jump at 5 feet, even, and Matt Nussbaum placed third in the 110 hurdles in 19.4 seconds.
Cox leads victory
Bailey Cox smacked a triple in the first inning Monday as All Circuit Electric defeated Williams Auto Parts 6-0 in Portland Junior League Rookie League baseball.
Cox, R.J. Lennartz and Cole Robinette each finished with a run and an RBI in the game that was called in the fourth inning because of rain. Heniser scored twice.
Qadon Ferrell and Cameron Lawhead had the only hits for Williams.[[In-content Ad]]
