ST. MARYS, Ohio - The Indians pushed one of the best teams in the state, but took their first loss of the season Saturday.
Fort Recovery's volleyball team finished 2-1 at the St. Marys Invitational Saturday with victories of 25-9, 25-18 over Bethel and 25-11, 25-12 over the Mount Notre Dame junior varsity. The Tribe lost 25-23, 25-23 to Old Fort, which finished the 2005 season fifth in the Division IV state poll.
Tiff Gaerke racked up a team-high 33 kills during the tournament, staying consistent with 11 in each match. She also had eight blocks.
Brittany Brackman led the way with 34 points, including 15 against Bethel, and also had five digs. Abby Niekamp was right behind Brackman with 32 points, and she added 58 assists.
Kinsey Wenning notched 15 kills on the weekend, and Lauren Wenning had seven digs.
Byrge closing in
OSGOOD - Kenny Bryge has all but wrapped up the championship. The owner's title is in the bag.
Byrge, Dunkirk, earned his grandfather and car owner, Larry Teegarden of Portland, the United Midget Racing Association owner's championship with a second place finish at Ripley County Fairgrounds Thursday.
Teegarden has 1,849 points, enough to secure the title ahead of Johnny Goff (1,564) although there are still two races on the schedule. Bryge's lead in the driver's points over Ron Combs is slightly slimmer (1,849-1,595), but the Indiana University senior should be able to lock up his championship at Saturday's race in New Castle.
Byrge was second in the feature race at Ripley County, finishing behind Tate Martz. He also took second in his heat race.
FR freshman spikers roll
FORT RECOVERY - The Indians rolled to their first win Saturday, defeating Memorial (St. Marys) 25-9, 25-15.
The Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team (1-1) got a big effort from Emily May, who finished with 11 points, one kill and one dig. Josie Guggenbiller added 10 points and a pair of assists, and Chelsey Leuthold had one kill, one block and one dig.
Eagle spikers win
DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School sixth and seventh grade volleyball team won its opening match Thursday be a 25-21, 25-17 score over the South Adams Starfires.
Megan Sawyer paced the Eagles with 12 points, including nine in the opening game. Krisha Barber and Melinda Penrod each scored seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
