Foster, Shawver lead Jay's 2nd-place finish (04/19/04)

JCHS roundup

The Jay County golf team continued its rise from last season at the Bellmont Invitational Saturday. Still, it was well behind the one team it knows will be its main sectional rival.

The Patriotsm who were fourth last year, finished second at Bellmont with a score of 340 — 15 strokes back of the champion Norwell Knights. Fort Wayne South Side was third at 349.

Jay County and Norwell had matching scores at last seasons sectional meet to tie for second, and both teams have everyone back this year.

Adam Foster paced the Patriots with an 81, which placed him second among individual golfers. Senior Jesse Shawver was right behind as he finished in third with an 81.

From there, however, there was a large enough gap for the Knights to take the win.

Nathan McClung was the No. 3 Jay County scorer at 89. Alex Hunt rounded out the team score with a 90, and Tyler Johnston shot 91.

JC loses close pair

It’s possible the Jay County softball team could have endured a more heart-breaking pair of losses. It’s just hard to imagine how.

The Patriots lost both halves of its double-header against the Richmond Red Devils — the first in extra innings — by scores of 8-7 and 5-4.

Jay County (2-6) held leads in both games, and was up 7-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth in game one. It left 21 runners on base, including 14 in the second contest.

The first game saw the teams tied at 5-5 after seven innings, but Jay County took the lead in the top of the eighth. However, the Red Devils (5-2) rallied with three runs for the win, taking advantage of two walks, a dropped third strike and an error.

The Patriots jumped ahead 2-0 in the second game, but Richmond scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and once in the third for a 4-2 lead. Jay County tied the contest with two runs in the fourth inning, only to have the Red Devils score what would be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth.

The heart of the order was ecellent for the Patriots, with Stephanie Imel, Amber Champ and Katie Alberson each picking up at least two hits in each games. They combined for 15 of the team’s 26 hits overall.

Alberson finished game one with two hits, two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases. She had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs in game two.

Imel had two hits and two runs in the first game. She followed in the second with a 4-for-4 effort, including a double, with a run and two RBIs.

Champ went 3-for-4 in game one with a triple, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base. She added two hits and a run in game two.

Ashleigh Myers added two hits and two RBIs in game one, and Jenni Chittum also had two hits. Chittum stole two bases and scored twice in the second contest.

Brittany Logue (0-3) suffered the game-one loss allowing eight runs — six earned — on 10 hits in eight innings. She walked seven and struck out two.

Myers (2-3) was the losing pitcher in game two as she gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings. She struck out two and walked two.

Jay County’s next game is at home today against Anderson Highland at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
