Fox leads South Adams

BERNE — A big fourth quarter was key for the South Adams High School boys basketball team Saturday is it halted an five-game losing streak with a 59-44 victory over the visiting Woodlan Warriors.
Blake Fox scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for the Starfires (4-10, 1-5 Allen County Athletic Conference), whose last win came Jan. 4 against Bellmont. Their losing streak included a 38-19 loss to Woodlan (2-14, 0-7 ACAC) in the conference tournament.
SAHS trailed by two with 2:35 to go in the third quarter, but finished the period on a 7-0 run and never trailed again. It pushed ahead by as many as 15 points as it outscored the Warriors 19-9 in the final period.
Scott Hoeppner and Dustin Wanner followed Fox with 11 points apiece, and Ben Meshberger shot 5-of-6 from the field for 10 points.
In junior varsity action, Matt Alig led the Starfires to a 40-38 victory with 11 points.

Jay gymnasts third
CONNERSVILLE — The Jay County gymnastics team scored a 98.075 to finish third at the six-team Connersville Invitational Saturday behind the host Spartans (101.35) and Noblesville (98.775).
Nikita Gundersen posted a season-high 9.0 to win the floor exercise for the Patriots, who lost their top competitor to an injury. Sophomore Katie Snyder, a state qualifier on the vault last season, fell from the uneven bars and suffered a broken arm that required surgery.
Gunderson was also second on the balance beam with an 8.95, and posted the top JCHS score with an 8.1 on the bars. Tasya Smith finished third on the vault with an 8.65, and Kristen Ainsworth was just five hundredths of a point behind her in fourth place.

Cline finishes season
MUNCIE — The bowling season came to an end Saturday for Carly Cline of the Jay County High Rollers high school bowling team as she competed at the semi-state tournament.
Cline had her best effort in her first game, rolling a 161. But, she was unable to reach the top-nine finish required to qualify for state as she concluded the day with games of 130 and 144.
The senior had advanced to the semi-state tournament with a fifth-place finish at the regional, where she rolled a 539 series.

SA 2nd, EJ third
The South Adams and East Jay middle school wrestling teams finished just off the pace Saturday as EJMS hosted the East Jay Invitational.
The Starfires scored 309 points to finish just five behind champion Delta, and the Chiefs were third with 305.
East Jay earned two championships on the day as both Mitchell Bruggeman (85) and Alex Abbott (95) finished 3-0. Matt Blackford (110), Luke Rowles (115), Levi Hummel (135), Kaleb Toland (145), Hunter Gillette (152) and Andy Kohler (160) all finished second.
Spencer Niece, Chance Sprunger, Ryan Ford, Sawyer Miller, Boaz Marbach and Gabe Schwartz all won championships for South Adams. Mason Morningstar was a runner-up.[[In-content Ad]]
