FR girls show off on court, in classroom (03/24/04)

Local Roundup

The most impressive awards announced for the Fort Recovery winter sports season were only partly because of the athlete’s performance on the court.

As good as the Indians’ girls basketball team was this year — 15-7 overall and 7-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference — it was equally outstanding in the classroom. Every eligible member of the team was named to the MAC All-Conference academic team.

The boys basketball team added four more all-academic honorees, and Fort Recovery also announced its MVP, Most Improved and Indian Award winners Tuesday. The Indian Award is given to the player who exemplifies team leadership.

Seniors Joscie Kaup, Jenn Stahl and Olivia Post led the list of academic stand-outs for the girls team. They were joined by juniors Rachel Brackman, Krystal Rammel, Brenda Rindler, Alyssa Tobe and Megan Wenning and sophomore Ciera Rammel.

In order to be receive all-conference academic honors in the MAC an athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior, earn a varsity letter and maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

Joining the girls in earning the academic award were three-year letter winner John Bihn, Sean Kahlig, Dusty Tobe and Nick Wehrkamp from the boys team.

Seniors dominated the rest of the awards for the girls team with Joscie Kaup taking MVP honors and the Indian Award.

Kaup was also a first-team selection All-MAC, All-Northwest District and All-Ohio player this year. She averaged 16.7 points per game while setting a school record with 43 pointers this year.

She also led the team with a 78 percent mark from the foul line, 70 assists and 58 steals.

Stahl won the Most Improved Player award. She averaged 7.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, and was nearly perfect at the foul line as she finished 15-of-16.

She was honored on the All-MAC second team, and received All-Northwest District honorable mention this season.

Junior Dusty Tobe was the MVP for the boys team, following a season in which he averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He shot 77 percent from the foul line, and was first-team All-MAC selection.

Senior C.J. Tobe took home the Indian Award, and sophomore Travis VanSkyock was named the Most Improved Player. Tobe scored 5.9 points per game off the bench this year, and Travis VanSkyock added 4.9 in his first varsity season.
