Collegiate Check-up
The two-point shots weren't falling. But Holly Stein still made a big impact.
Despite missing all six of her field-goal tries from inside the 3-point arc, Stein, a 2007 Fort Recovery High School graduate, turned in another double-double Monday as her Defiance College women's basketball team evened its record with an 86-79 win over Wilberforce.
While struggling inside, Stein was the only Yellow Jacket to make a 3-pointer. She hit three of her four attempts from long distance, and buried both of her free throws for 11 points.
Stein added a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with two assists and a steal.
The freshman had eight points, five rebounds and three assists in a Dec. 15 loss to Milligan, 108-80.
Tyler Niekamp
Fort Recovery - 2003
Scored in double figures for the first time this season as his University of Findlay men's basketball team, which is ranked 15th in the NCAA's Division II, improved to 7-2 on the season.
Niekamp's double-digit effort came on a perfect shooting afternoon Dec. 15 against Michigan Tech. He went 3-for-3 from the field, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range, and shot 2-of-2 at the foul line for 10 points.
The senior also grabbed four rebounds in the 79-40 victory.
Niekamp added five points and an assists Tuesday in a 76-66 triumph over Lake Erie.
Kurt Hess
Jay County - 2006
Dropped his only match for the Carson-Newman wrestling team at the Newberry Duals.
Hess lost by pin Dec. 15 to Kevin James of Belmont Abbey at 141 pounds. The teams finished in a 21-21 tie.[[In-content Ad]]
