FORT RECOVERY - The Indians' defense never let up. And the Jay County offense eventually gave way.

The visiting Patriots managed just eight points in the second half Saturday as Fort Recovery handed them a 47-28 defeat.

"Give them all the credit," said JCHS coach Kirk Comer after his team suffered just its second loss of the year. "They played outstanding defense, the best defense that we've played against all year. They forced us to set our offense a lot higher than what we're accustomed to doing. Therefore we were out of sync on the offensive end. They forced us to go places we don't want to go. They just did an outstanding job.

"And we didn't hit shots. But you've got to give them all the credit. They were in our face the whole game."

Despite falling behind 10-3, Jay County (8-2) stayed close in the opening half. It pulled within three after a Pazia Speed steal and hoop with three minutes to go in the second quarter, but the Indians pushed back to 26-20 and the Patriot offense was nowhere to be found after the intermission.

Fort Recovery (7-0) scored the opening six points of the second half as the Patriots failed to score for the first 4:15. They turned the ball over nine times and managed just two shots in that span before Kaelee Keller finally got a 3-pointer to fall.

But that shot was the only one to go in for Jay County in the third period. The Indians ran off seven more points in a row, capping a 13-3 domination of the quarter on a Holly Stein put-back.

"I think the longer the game went the less and less confident we got unfortunately," said Comer. "I felt like their defensive pressure was good all night ... we mentally let down. I think we were tougher mentally in the first half than we were in the second half."

Keller hit another 3-pointer - she finished 3-of-4 from long distance for a team-high nine points - on the opening possession of the fourth period to get Jay County within 39-26. But the Patriots failed to score for the next 6:30 as the Tribe ran off eight more points in a row to put the game away.

Jay County shot 1-of-8 with 11 turnovers in the third period, went 3-of-19 in the second half overall and turned the ball over 30 times. It barely avoided being the fifth team to lose to the Indians by 20 or more points when Nicole Pfeifer hit a jumper with 1:21 to play.

By holding the Patriots to just 28 points, Fort Recovery dropped its defensive points against average to a minuscule 29.7 per game. Its defensive field goal percentage is just under 28 percent.

"We'll guard you," said FRHS coach Jeff Roessner, whose team's closest game thus far was a nine-point win over Versailles. "That's something that we know how to do and we're doing pretty well.

"We're pretty good, but so is the rest of our schedule. ... It's just way too early to talk about where we're at. We still have to work offensively getting things where we want to sooner."

While the Indians forced turnover after turnover, they also took care of the ball. Averaging 15 give-aways a game through the first six, Fort Recovery coughed up the ball just 10 times against the Patriots.

Roessner said his squad made a concerted effort to go inside in the second half, which also kept the Tribe's post players in better rebounding position. After getting beaten on the glass 13-7 in the opening half, Fort Recovery stayed even with the Patriots in the second.

Getting the ball inside also paid dividends at the foul line as the Indians shot 15 free throws in the second half. Jay County went to the line just three times and missed on all three attempts.

"We had to get to the free-throw line and we weren't able to do that," said Comer. "We thought we could get a lot of over-the-back calls, but when you don't box out you're not going to get that call. A lot of times tonight we were in position, but we didn't make good enough contact ... to earn those calls. ... They're just a really good team."

Abby Loy followed Keller with six points for the Patriots before fouling out with 2:12 to play. Lindsey Wellman had six rebounds.

Stein powered the Tribe with 14 points, Tiff Gaerke added eight and Vicki Roessner scored seven. Stein also shared the game-high of six rebounds, and Gaerke and Abby Niekamp each added four. Joanna Snyder dished out three assists.

The only negative for Fort Recovery in the second half came in the fourth quarter when senior Sam Staugler went down with a knee injury. She was expected to undergo an MRI today.

Despite the final margin, Roessner was complimentary of his inter-state rival.

"Jay County just came in here and played their hearts out," he said. "I've got the utmost respect for their coach and for their players. ... The game didn't go their way today, but it wasn't because they didn't play hard enough to get it done. I think you've just got to give them a ton of credit for where the program is and for what they can do the rest of the way."

Junior varsity

Kelsey Wuebker gave Fort Recovery the lead for good as it pulled away for a 36-27 victory over the Patriots.

Jay County (9-1) led 17-13 at halftime, but could not hold on. Wuebker pushed the Indians (6-1) ahead with a hoop with 3:35 to play in the third quarter and they never trailed again.

Wuebker had six points, five rebounds and three blocks before leaving the game in the third quarter with a dislocated patella (knee cap). Chelsey Leuthold and Nicole Pottkotter each scored seven points, and Rachel Tobe and Kinsey Wenning added six apiece. Wenning had seven rebounds and three blocks, Leuthold racked up six steals and Pottkotter had four assists.

Amber Edmundson had eight points, eight rebounds, four steals and a block as the Patriots suffered their first loss of the season. Pazia Speed and Gina Muhlenkamp added six points apiece.

Sarah Westgerdes had eight rebounds, and Brittany Mann came up with six steals.

Freshman

Jay County had a 6-2 lead after the opening period, but managed just one second-quarter point as the Indians improved to 3-1 with a 31-23 victory.

Alyssa Brackman led Fort Recovery, which was up by three at halftime and eight at the end of the third quarter. She scored 14 points.

Erika Muhlenkamp added six points, and Kelsey Brockman and Emily May each scored four.

Jamie Klinger, Brittany Muhlenkamp and Shelby Gierhart scored seven points apiece for the Patriots, who suffered just their second defeat of the year.[[In-content Ad]]
