Freshman powers Patriots

Jay County roundup

In their third game, the Patriots came up with their first goal of the season. It was all they needed.

Freshman Sammi Compton's score was the only one of the game Tuesday as the Jay County High School girls soccer team defeated the visiting Connersville Spartans 1-0.

The Patriots (1-2) were blanked in opening losses to Heritage and Huntington North, but didn't need much time to get on the board against their Olympic Athletic Conference rivals. Just over six minutes into the game junior Lindsay Moser connected on a crossing pass to Compton, who put the ball into the net for her first career goal.

The remainder of the game belonged to goalie Mollie May and the defense as JCHS shut down a Connersville squad that made an especially strong push in the closing minutes. May stayed strong for the shutout after recording seven saves in the first half.

Other shots on goal along with Compton's came from Loryn Horn, Mallory Poole, LeAnn Horn and Tiffany Huelskamp.

Boys soccer wins

NEW CASTLE - The Jay County boys soccer team's first goal of the year came just two seconds before halftime Tuesday as it picked up a 3-1 victory over the New Castle Trojans.

Brad Horn, a senior who scored 27 times last season, tallied the Patriots' first goal. Again it took a while to get going in the second half before senior Patrick Johnson pushed the JCHS lead to 2-0 with 6:02 remaining.

Horn scored again with 2:50 on the clock before New Castle got on the board 29 seconds later.

The Patriots (1-1) finished with seven shots on goal, including four from Horn. Johnson added two and Jeremiah Cotherman had one.

Adam Daniels finished with four saves.

Jay County's junior varsity team lost 8-5 to the Trojans with Colton McCombs accounting for four of its goals. Hai Hong had the other score.

AC defeats spikers

For the second straight evening the Jay County volleyball team lost to an Adams County foe, this time falling 25-20, 25-11, 25-12 to the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets.

The Patriots (0-6), who fell to South Adams in four games Monday, got nine digs and five kills from senior Kelsey Wood. Ashley Langenkamp added six assists and three points.

Laura Castillo totaled seven digs, and Mariah Hornaday had four kills.

Hannah Ainsworth finished with eight assists and four points as the JCHS junior varsity team (3-3) lost 25-12, 25-24 to Adams Central. Alyssa Rigby had five points and four digs, Megan May notched seven digs and Danielle Wellman totaled six kills.[[In-content Ad]]
