FRHS finishes second

EATON, Ohio — Only a top-five team could beat the Tribe.
Elle Sutter and Abby May each finished in the top 10 Saturday to lead the Fort Recovery High School girls cross country team to a runner-up finish at the Eaton Invitational. The Indians, who tied for 16th in this week’s Division III poll voting, scored 98 points to trail only No. 4 Russia (36) in the 13-team field.
The Indian boys scored 267 points to finish seventh out of 19. Fourth-ranked Minster won with 40 points.
While Russia took the top three positions in the girls race, Sutter and May finished back-to-back for FRHS. Sutter finished sixth in 20 minutes, 29.89 seconds, and May placed seventh in 20:41.
Caitlyn Huelskamp was 16th in 21:13 followed by Jessica Vogel (30th – 22:27) and Sam Tobe (43rd – 22:59).
Derek Sutter finished in 17:36 to lead the Fort Recovery boys with a 13th-place finish. Joey Gonzalez was 50th in 19 minutes flat ahead of Nathan Fullenkamp (55th – 19:11), Isaac Siegrist (81st – 20:22) and Mitchell Homan (88th – 20:45).

’Dogs edge volleyball
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery was a game away from victory, but came up just short in a 25-16, 24-26, 22-25, 25-10, 18-16 loss to the Celina Bulldogs.
Senior Kelsey Fiely finished with 20 digs, 16 service points and six kills to lead the Indians, who are now 4-6. Haley Knapke had 11 blocks and five kills.
Cassidy Rammel put up 14 assists, Hannah Kaup had nine digs, Emily Link scored six service points and Tori Lennartz finished with six blocks.
Rachel Pugh totaled five digs, three blocks and three kills as the junior varsity team lost 25-17, 25-7.

Golfers finished 12th
CELINA, Ohio — The Indians placed 12th out of 16 teams at Saturday’s Jordan Moeller Memorial tournament at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.
Fort Recovery finished with a score of 374, which was 19 strokes better than 13th-place Lehman Catholic. Van Wert won with a 325.
Chase Bruns picked up a pair of birdies on the front nine to lead the Tribe. He birdied the 452-yard, par-5 first hole and the 349-yard, par-4 sixth on the way to shooting an 89.

Elijah Kahlig finished with seven pars to follow Bruns with a 91, and Kent Retz and Derek Backs each finished at 97. Stewy Alig shot 112.

JV football falls
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery couldn’t find the end zone Saturday as it slipped to 2-2 with a 21-3 loss to the Marion Local Flyers.
The Indians trailed just 7-3 at halftime after Jackson Hobbs’ 27-yard field goal in the second quarter. But Marion Local tallied touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters while FRHS went scoreless in the second half.

Heitkamp, Gehle lead
EATON, Ohio — The Fort Recovery Middle School girls cross country team finished fifth out of 11 teams at Saturday’s Eaton Invitational. The boys were 10th out of 11.
Angela Heitkamp and Grace Gehle each made the top 10 for the Indian girls, with Heitkamp taking sixth in 13 minutes, 24.39 seconds. Gehle placed seventh in 13:50.
Paige Hemmert finished in 14:48 for 21st place ahead of Sydney Alig (55th – 16:04) and Heather Klenke (56th – 16:05).
Harrison Kaup was the top runner for the FRMS boys with a time of 13:39 for 36th place. Also running for the Tribe were Jared Heitkamp (50th – 14:11), Ty Francis (75th – 15:31), Rodney Hemmert (78th – 15:52) and Eddie Hemmert (86th – 16:41).

Cavs top FRMS spikers
ST. HENRY, Ohio — The FRMS eighth grade volleyball team suffered a 25-11, 25-6 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers Saturday, and the seventh grade team fell 25-3, 25-13.
Devin Post finished with five service points for the eighth grade Indians (2-6, 0-3 Midwest Athletic Conference). Grace Thien had three digs for the Fort Recovery seventh graders (5-3, 1-2 MAC), and Alexis Bubp scored two service points.
