FRHS stumbles against No. 4 Jays

DELPHOS, Ohio - The Indians led the fourth-ranked team in the state by five with just a quarter to play. But similar to their meeting in the tournament last season, the Tribe could not hold on.

Fort Recovery High School's girls basketball team gave up a 14-3 run to start the fourth quarter Thursday on the way to a 59-53 loss to the host Division IV No. 4 St. John's Blue Jays.

In last season's district semifinal game, the Tribe led 17-3 and was still up by nine in the fourth quarter before falling 48-46.

The Indians (13-5, 6-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) were up 44-39 with a quarter to play Thursday, but St. John's (18-2, 8-1 MAC) scored the first eight points of the final period to reclaim the lead. The Blue Jays pushed ahead by as many as six before Kendra Brunswick hit a couple of free throws with 1:21 left to pull the Tribe back within two.

However, Fort Recovery managed just one point the rest of the way in the defeat.

Zefiryn Bryan shot 9-of-14 from the field for St. Johns as she finished with team highs of 19 points, six rebounds and five steals. Lindsey Reindel added 10 points.

Chelsea Leuthold had 17 points for the Indians, who were hurt by 25 turnovers. Kendra Brunswick added 12 points, Holly Brunswick scored 10 points and Nicole Pottkotter totaled eight points and eight boards.

Fort Recovery got eight points from Kelly Nietfeld in the junior varsity game, but lost 31-28.

WJ grapplers split

DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School wrestling team split matches Thursday as it hosted a triple dual.

The Eagles defeated Randolph Southern 69-18, but fell 60-36 to Winchester Driver.

Bryce Bantz (105) turned in a pair of pins for West Jay, finishing off both of his matches in just 17 seconds. Mitch Bennett (HWT) earned a pin in 2:16 against Driver and won 9-8 in his match versus Randolph Southern.

Other pins against Randolph Southern came from Jacob Barker (85) in 16 seconds and Coby Green 9100) in 25 seconds. Adding victories against Driver were Jesse Finnerty (120) with a pin in 11 seconds and Sean Winget (125) with a pin in 3 minutes, 32 seconds.

Fort's season ends

MINSTER, Ohio - Fort Recovery Middle School's eighth grade boys basketball team finished its season Thursday with a 42-33 loss to Marion Local in the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament.

Elijah Kahlig scored 12 points for the Indians, who turned in an 11-3 record this year. Ben Dilworth added six points.[[In-content Ad]]
