Garringer's triple powers Patriots (08/18/06)
JCHS girls soccer
MONROEVILLE - Jay County's Sara Garringer opened her season with a hat trick. So did Breanna Conrad of Heritage.
The difference was, Garringer had some help.
The senior's three-goal effort was aided by one tally from fellow returning scoring leader Dana Horn and a couple of career firsts as the visiting Jay County Patriots defeated the host Heritage Patriots 6-3 Thursday.
A score by Garringer just over eight minutes into the game gave Jay County (1-0) a lead it would never relinquish, although Conrad tried to bring her team back. With her team trailing 4-1 midway through the second half, Heritage's leader scored twice in the matter of a minute to get her team close. However, JCHS scored twice in the final 2-minutes, 30 seconds to seal the game.
Following Garringer's first goal, Horn, a junior, scored her first of the season for the 2-0 Patriot advantage. Conrad cut the deficit to 2-1, only to have Garringer assist on sophomore Brianne Wellman's first career score. The assist was also the 10th of Garringer's career, tying her for the school record with 2005 graduate Jamie Bruggeman.
Garringer added her second goal 15 minutes into the second half, and Conrad responded with her pair to again pull her squad within one. With 2:27 to play sophomore Kaelee Keller busted down the middle of the field and scored her first career goal.
"Dana Horn and Kaelee Keller were relentless," said JCHS coach Sue Rager. "They played extremely well both offensively and defensively. They were the stars of the show."
Then, for good measure, junior Abby Loy assisted on Garringer's third goal with just 6.2 seconds left on the clock.
Loy also had four saves in the first half before freshman Pazia Speed recorded one save in the second half.[[In-content Ad]]
