Gelhaus racks up 39 to lead Tribe

Local roundup

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians’ lead slipped to one point in the fourth quarter. Wade Gelhaus wouldn’t let them lose.
The Fort Recovery High School senior scored more in the final period than anyone else did in the entire game as he finished with 39 points to lead the Tribe to a 64-56 victory over the Greenville Green Wave.
Gelhaus scored 17 of the 19 FRHS points in the fourth quarter, and assisted on a score by Kent Retz. He shot 17-of-19 from the foul line for the game, including 11-of-12 in the final 4:08, and his scoring total tied Ken Heiby and Kevin Dilworth for the seventh-highest single-game total in school history.
Elijah Kahlig added 15 points and six rebounds for the Indians (2-0), who never trailed in the second half. Ben Dilworth had three assists.
Wes Wenning had 10 points in the junior varsity team’s 52-17 win.

Vormohr places 52nd
AUSTIN, Texas — Anne Vormohr placed 52nd in the 100-yard backstroke Friday at the USA Winter National Championships at the University of Texas.
Vormohr, a Jay County freshman, posted a time of 56.83 seconds to finish one hundredth of a second behind 51st-place Maya Skorupski of Chicago. Her time was just 0.34 seconds off the 56.49 she posted at the Indiana Age Group State Finals earlier this year to qualify for the national meet.
Missy Franklin, who won Olympic gold medals in August in the 100-meter backstroke, 200 backstroke and a pair of relays, took first place in the 100-yard backstroke at the winter nationals in 51.87 seconds.
Six of the top nine athletes in the 100 backstroke were 18 or older, and 32 of the 69 competitors were 20 or older. Vormohr was one of just four swimmers who were 15 or younger.

FR girls improve to 3-0
WAPAKONETA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team came up big in the final two minutes Saturday to stay undefeated with a 62-59 victory over the Wapakoneta Redskins.
The teams traded the lead in the fourth quarter, with Wapakoneta’s Annie Henderson tying the game for the ninth and final time with 1:40 to play. Kelsey Fiely responded with a shot to give the Indians (3-0) the lead just 20 seconds later, and after a Henderson miss Sierra Pugh split a couple of free throws to extend the lead. Amy Hune missed two more shots down the stretch for the Redskins as Fort Recovery held on.
Tori Lennartz hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 points to lead FRHS. Fiely added 17 points, and Melissa Lochtefeld scored 10.
Kelsey Evers notched 11 points for the junior varsity Indians, who fell 40-33.

Heritage tops Starfires
BERNE — Dzejna Ahmetovic scored more than half of the Starfires’ points Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the host South Adams girls basketball team fell 39-34 to the Heritage Patriots.
Ahmetovic was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line and racked up 20 points to lead the Starfires (3-4, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference). However, no one else managed more than four points for  SAHS, which was missing leading scorer Alyssa Bluhm because of an illness.
Katie Saalfrank totaled 16 points for Heritage (4-2, 1-1 ACAC), and Hannah Beckman added eight points and five assists.[[In-content Ad]]
