Geneva rallies to top Foresters (06/09/06)

Baseball roundup

HUNTINGTON — The Cardinals finally took flight in the ninth inning Thursday.

Geneva went scoreless through the first eight innings, but posted seven runs in the ninth as it took a 7-5 victory over the Huntington Foresters.

With his team trailing 4-0, captain Alex Childers led off the final frame by getting hit by a pitch. Danner Partridge was also hit by a pitch, and after a fielder’s choice the parade of runs began.

The next eight Cardinal batters reached base as Corey Oetting ripped a double, and Colin Ziegel, Ryan Bedwell and Partridge each added singles.

Jared Baker took the ball for Geneva (6-3) in the bottom of the ninth and allowed two hits and a run to start the inning. But he retired the next three batters for the save.

Nathaniel Glant got the win in relief of Dan Hunt.

Mariners top Portland

CELINA, Ohio — The Portland Rockets got plenty of runners on base. They just couldn’t push them to home plate.

Portland slipped to 3-2 Thursday, leaving 15 men on base in an 8-2 loss to the Grand Lake Mariners.

The Rockets had seven hits and runners on base in every inning, but fell behind 5-0 and never recovered. Jay County graduate Mitch Waters had two hits, and former Patriot Heath Williams was one of five others with one hit apiece.

Korey Heppeard took the loss as he gave up five runs in six innings.[[In-content Ad]]
