Giants defeat Jay Co. in finals (05/22/06)
JCHS girls tennis
MARION — For the fifth straight season, the Jay County girls tennis team’s season ended with a loss to Marion. But with a strong finish, the Patriots hope they’re building toward turning that result around.
Jay County had just three wins in its first 15 matches, but won three in a row before falling 5-0 to the host Giants in Saturday’s sectional championship match.
It marked the fifth straight title for Marion — it will graduate four seniors compared to just one of JCHS — which has now won 14 of the last 15 crowns. Only the Patriots were able to break the streak in 2001.
“We knew that Marion was the cream of the crop in the sectional,” said Jay County coach Roy Adams. “They had played above everyone else.
But, Adams added, he feels his group is primed to give the Giants a strong challenge next May.
“(My team is) not ready for the season to be over,” he said. “They’re very interested in continuing on. They’re hungry to be (get better) and to get to the finals again is a testament to their hard work.”
Tiffani Bickel and Cindy Muhlenkamp turned in the closest match for Jay County (6-13), even leading Joanna Lucas and Larissa Barrido 4-3 in the opening set. But they dropped three straight games at No. 2 doubles to lose the opening set in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat.
In the other doubles match Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle lost 6-1, 6-1 to Alyssa Curfman and Alex Lester.[[In-content Ad]]
