Giants halt JCHS streak

MARION — The run of six straight victories came to an abrupt end.
The Marion Giants scored three times in each half Thursday as they handed the Jay County High School boys soccer team a 6-0 defeat.
Marion racked up 13 shots on goal compared to just one for the Patriots. JCHS (7-3-3) had won picked up consecutive wins over Union City, Blackford, South Adams, Wapahani, Bellmont and Centerville since their last defeat Sept. 1 at Norwell.
Austin Cowan finished with seven saves.
Caleb Fifer scored the only goal for the Patriot junior varsity team, which lost 7-1.

JC spikers lose
The Jay County volleyball team struggled against the Class 1A No. 2 Wes-Del Warriors Thursday, falling 25-15, 25-15, 25-10.
Hannah Ainsworth finished with 11 assists, four service points on 8-of-8 serving and four digs as Jay County fell to 9-12. Mariah Hornaday had eight kills, three digs and 1.5 blocks.
Bri McIntire notched four kills, Alyssa Rigby came up with three digs and Maria Murphy and Malarie Houck each had two service points.
Faith Parr had seven digs in the junior varsity team’s 25-18, 25-22 loss to Wes-Del, and Courtney Finnerty put up six assists. Katie Aker scored six service points, and Emily Westgerdes had two kills.

SA volleyball falls
WINCHESTER — South Adams’ volleyball team fought to avoid a sweep before falling 25-17, 25-18, 27-29, 25-16 Thursday to the Winchester Golden Falcons.
Alyssa Bluhm recorded 15 assists, 10 digs, six kills and four aces for the Starfires, who fell to 6-15.
Cady Farlow had 11 digs, six blocks and five kills, and Chelsea Bollenbacher finished with nine blocks and five kills.
South Adams picked up the junior varsity victory 25-15, 20-25, 15-10. Mackenzie Jennings had 10 digs and four kills.

Chiefs take two
The East Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team evened its record Thursday with a 25-14, 25-20 victory over visiting Richmond Dennis. The seventh grade team also won, 25-16, 25-23.
Kylie Osborne set the pace for the eighth graders, who are now 7-7, with eight service points, four assists and three aces. Abby Wendel had nine service points and three aces, and Gabby Hart finished with three kills.
Lizzy Schoenlein totaled eight service points, including six aces, for the seventh graders (8-5). Gracie Runkle added six service points.

EJ runners cruise
East Jay rolled to a pair of cross country victories Thursday over Richmond Dennis with the girls winning 15-50 and the boys posting a 20-43 triumph.
Emi Minnich paced the Chief girls, who took the top 11 spots, winning by 30 seconds over teammate Megan Wellman in 13 minutes, 17 seconds. Erika Kunkler was third in 14:23 ahead of Jamie Valentine (14:24) and Sydney Mathias (14:30).
Michael Denney turned in a runner-up finish in 13:20 to lead the EJMS boys. Matthew Cox was third in 13:43 followed by Mark Hein (fourth – 13:43), Tim Hein (fifth – 13:49) and Ethan Wendel (sixth – 14:18).[[In-content Ad]]
