Giants knock off Jay Co. again (04/14/04)

Local Roundup

The cold weather which kept most local teams out of action Tuesday didn’t stop the Jay County tennis team. The Marion Giants took care of that task.

The Patriots managed to take one match, but didn’t have much success anywhere else in a 4-1 loss Tuesday to two-time defending sectional champion Marion.

The Giants (2-0), who have won 11 of the last 12 sectional titles with only Jay County breaking the streak in 2001, defeated the Patriots (1-2) for the fifth straight time. The 2002 and 2003 sectional championship matches accounted for two of those victories by Marion.

The No. 1 doubles team of Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers picked up the lone victory on the day for Jay County. They defeated Prerna Raj and Kyndal Jacks 6-3, 6-2.

Angie Stults gave the Patriots the next best chance at a win as she was the only other player on the team to win more than two games. Still, she fell to a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Amee Patel at No. 3 singles.

Whitney Schemenaur dropped her match to Meryl Lester 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles Chelsea Reff, playing her first singles match of the year after a pair at No. 2 doubles, lost by the same score to Stephanie Flaig.

Jessica DeRome and Janae Horn played their first varsity match of the season, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Alyssa Curfman and Carling Barrett.

Jay County will try to get back on track Thursday when it hosts Bluffton at 4:30 p.m.

The Patriot junior varsity team (1-2) also lost to Marion Tuesday by a 4-1 score.

Again it was the No. 1 doubles pair scoring the lone win for Jay County. Amanda Hicks and Shonda Sutton combined for an 8-5 victory over Andrea Sandoval and Katie Weesner.

Megan Knittle and Jessica Muhlenkamp lost at No. 2 doubles 8-2.

Annika Kuitzsch played the closest singles match at the No. 3 spot, falling to Larissa Barrido 8-3. Brianne Morrical lost to Emily Voss 8-2 at No. 1 singles, and Carissa Wilkins dropped her No. 2 singles match to Joanna Lucas 8-1.

Indians lose

The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team slipped to 0-4 in a 7-4 rain-shortened defeat to the Franklin Monroe Jets Monday.

The Tribe fell behind 4-1 in the fourth inning and never completely recovered. It cut the gap with runs in the second and fourth innings, but the Jets added three in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Craig Garman took the defeat, allowing seven runs — two earned — on eight hits in four innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Kevin Schoenherr went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Troy Metzger was 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a pair of stolen bases, and Tony Diller finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a steal.

Jesse Fortkamp singled, scored once and stole a base.
