Habegger leads Starfire golfers

GENEVA - Alex Habegger shared medalist honors Thursday, but the host South Adams High School boys golf team still lost 170-188 to the Woodlan Warriors

Habegger shared the best score of the day with Woodlan's Joe Schlie as they each finished with 41s at Golf Club of the Limberlost. Stuart Poulson turned in the No. 2 score for the Starfires with a 46.

Mark Muselman shot 49, and Daniel Heckard rounded out the team score with a 52. Mark Smith shot 53.

All five Warriors posted scores in the 40s.

Softball falls to Bluffton

BLUFFTON - The Starfires struggled to slow down the Bluffton Tigers' offense Thursday in a 13-3, six-inning defeat.

South Adams (4-4, 0-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) put up a run in the top of the first inning, but gave up three in the bottom and three more in the second as the Tigers took control. Katrina Hawkins suffered the loss as she gave up nine runs - seven earned - on eight hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Hawkins led the SAHS offense, going 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Karen Bollenbacher added two hits, and Tori Smith and Rosa Hilty each had a hit and a run.

Netters drop to 0-5

DECATUR - Kassy Potts and Lindsey Graber eked out the only victory for South Adams Thursday in a 4-1 loss to the host Bellmont Squaws.

Potts and Graber played a pair of close sets against Maddi Werling and Brianna Henkenins at No. 2 doubles, winning both to take a 7-5, 7-5 victory.

The Starfires (0-5) took the first set in two other matches only to fall in three sets in both. Tori Kistler suffered a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Allison Gutierrez at No. 1 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Muselman and Amber Neuenschwander fell lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Abby Stimpson and Madeline Albert.

Alex Fox lost 6-0, 6-1 to Alysha Helmrich at No. 3 singles, and Kellie Howell fell 6-0, 6-0 against Brittney Sanders at No. 2 singles.

In junior varsity action, Mallory Eicher and Holly Taylor won matches as the Starfires fell 5-2.

Tigers top baseball

BLUFFTON - Allowing six runs in the first inning buried the Starfires Thursday in an 11-1, five-inning loss to the Bluffton Tigers.

South Adams scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning, and the Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom to put the game away. Bluffton put up its 11 runs on just eight hits as it drew 10 walks.

Taylor Smith suffered the defeat, giving up six runs on three hits and four walks in just two-thirds of an inning.

Dustin Wanner singled and scored the only SAHS run in the fourth inning on a Caleb Sprunger fielder's choice.[[In-content Ad]]
