Habegger wins conference title for Bluffton (05/07/05)
Collegiate check-up
Amanda Habegger led the group of four South Adams graduates competing for the Bluffton University track teams at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships April 30.
Habegger was one of just two members of the women’s team to come away with an HCAC title as Bluffton finished third at the seven-team event. Fellow SAHS grad Steph Welch competed in three events at the meet as well with a top finish of fourth place.
Another former Starfire, Troy Baumer, finished third in his only event for the men’s team, and Jason Lehman’s top effort was a fifth-place finish. The Beaver men were the runners-up to Anderson University.
Habegger won the HCAC title in the 400-meter dash, finishing more than two seconds ahead of Kay Worden of Anderson with a time of 1-minute, 6.98 seconds. Worden finished in 1:09.51.
She added a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles, crossing the line just four hundredths of a second behind Steph Knox of Manchester in 16.39 seconds.
Welch’s fourth-place finish came in the high jump as she cleared the bar at four feet, eight inches. She added a seventh-place effort in the long jump at 14 feet, 61/2 inches, and was eighth in the 800 run in 2:33.09.
Baumer’s lone event at the meet was the 400 hurdles, in which he took third in 56.11.
Lehman earned his top finish with a leap of 19 feet, 83/4 inches in the long jump. He was also 13th at 37 feet, 13/4 inches in the triple jump.
He just missed making the finals in both the 100 dash and the 200 dash, finishing ninth in the preliminaries of both events.
Kerri McClung
The Bowling Green senior and Jay County graduate had a solid showing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa April 28-29.
McClung was seventh in the shot put, finishing just a quarter inch behind Aytmara Albury of Alabama at 50 feet, 13/4 inches. The other athletes ahead of here were Chandra Brewer of Florida, Bree Fuqua of Oregon, Aubrey Martin of Western Illinois, Liz Podminick of Minnesota and Beth Mallory of Alabama.
Joscie Kaup
The Fort Recovery graduate scored one of the Orange softball team’s four runs as it lost a pair of games to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sunday 6-1 and 7-3.
Kaup, a freshman, entered game two of the double-header as a pinch runner after Cassie Morales hit a one-out single in the fifth inning as Syracuse already trailed 7-2. She advanced to second on a walk by Alexis Switenko and to third on an Courtney Mosch single.
She then came in to score on an RBI walk by Shawna Norris.
Mitch Waters
A graduate of Jay County, he made his sixth pitching appearance of the season for the Manchester College baseball team in a 13-9 loss to Rose-Hulman Sunday.
Waters worked three innings in relief, allowing five runs on seven hits. He struck out one batter.
He is 1-2 with a 6.57 ERA, four strikeouts and one save this season. At the plate he is hitting .202 with five doubles, a home run, 12 RBIs and 11 runs.
Katlyn Gray
The Portland resident started 20 of 22 games for the Johnson Bible College women’s basketball team this season.
Gray, who graduated from Heritage Hall Christian School in Muncie, was fourth on the team in scoring with an average of 7.4 points per game. Her top scoring game this year was 17 points against Appalachian Bible College. She also averaged 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game.[[In-content Ad]]
