Heitkamp puts Crusaders back above. 500 (12/20/03)
Collegiate check-up
Sara Heitkamp as led the Capital Crusaders women’s basketball team back over .500 with some outstanding shooting against Marietta this week.
Heitkamp, a 2002 Fort Recovery graduate, finished 6-of-8 from the field in the 71-59 victory, finishing with 17 points. The win lifted Capital to 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Heitkamp was also 2-for-2 from 3-point range in the contest. She had four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Heitkamp also paced the Crusaders as she led them to the finals of the Transylvania Tournament two weeks ago.
She finished 7-of-10 from the field for 18 points in an 81-52 victory over Centre. She added team-highs of five rebounds, five assists and five steals in that contest.
Capital went on to lose to Transylvania in the title game 66-58. Heitkamp had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals in the defeat.
She also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards in a 56-48 loss at John Carroll Saturday, Dec. 13.
Heitkamp has emerged as the leader of the Crusaders this year. She is the team’s top scorer at 13.7 points per game.
She also has team highs with 43 steals, 35 assists and a .467 field goal percentage. She is second on the team with a 54 rebounds, for an average of six per game.
Weaver gets win
Kyle Weaver contributed one big win for the Wabash College men’s swim team and placed in five different events as the Little Giants finished second at the DePauw Invitational last week.
Wabash scored 645 points to finish behind champion Washington’s 805. Host DePauw was third with 609.5.
Weaver, a 2003 Jay County graduate, teamed with Matthew Perkins, Colin Fahey and Brandon Peacock to pick up his win. They took first in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.49.
He later joined Jeddah Wegerhoff, Zach Manker and Tony Caldwell in placing 12th in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:26.82.
The top individual finish for Weaver came in the 100-yard butterfly, where he was sixth in 55.53. He was also eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (58.77), and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle (51.44).
Caleb Dann, one of Weaver’s former Patriot teammates from the class of 2002, contributed a 16th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.68. Andrew Wells, another 2002 Jay County graduate, finished 17th in the 1650-yard freestyle in 20:11.72.
Boyles aids Bluffton
Brad Boyles, a graduate of South Adams, aided the Bluffton College men’s basketball team to a big win over Temple Baptist recently.
Boyles scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting to finish as one of the Beaver’s four players in double figures in a 89-53 victory. He also grabbed two rebounds, dished out three assists and notched one steal.
Bluffton’s Scott Bergman leads the team in scoring this year at 16.8 points per game, and Boyles is right behind him with 16.7
