Heitkamp racking up post-season awards (03/20/04)

Collegiate check-up

The four-time Ohio Athletic Conference player of the week has added several more awards to her resume now that the season has come to an end.

Sara Heitkamp, a 2002 Fort Recovery graduate, has picked up three more honors since her Capital University women’s basketball team completed a 20-6 campaign. She earned OAC All-Conference honors, OAC Academic All-Conference honors and a spot on the All-Region team.

Heitkamp, who led the Crusaders on a 12-game winning streak this year, was a first team All-Conference player and was named to the All-Great Lakes Region second team by D3Hoops.com. She paced Capital in scoring (16.5 ppg), rebounding (7.2 rpg), steals (111) and assists (89)

Her assist total was the best in the conference this season, and was a new school record.

The sophomore won All-Conference Academic first-team honors after taking the OAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month award in February. An early childhood education major, she carries a 3.846 grade point average and was also an Academic All-District IV selection as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Boyles is busy

South Adams graduate Brad Boyles is still pulling down awards from one sport as he begins to rack up victories in the next.

Boyles, a senior at Bluffton College, was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference men’s basketball team. At the same time is has already picked up a couple of wins for the men’s tennis team.

He was the lone Beaver to be selected to the HCAC All-Conference first team.

Boyles averaged a team-leading 15.2 points during his senior season. He was fourth in the conference in scoring, and ranked second in field goal percentage at .582.

He also shot 76 percent from the free-throw line.

Now he has moved on to tennis, where he and fellow former Starfire Kyle Sprunger racked up half of Bluffton’s victories in a 6-3 win over the University of Findlay Thursday, March 11.

Boyles earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and teamed with Sprunger for an 8-8 (7-4) triumph at No. 2 doubles. Sprunger added a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.

In the only other action for the Beavers, Sprunger contributed to a pair of wins in a 5-4 defeat at the hands of Capital.

Sprunger dominated the action at No. 4 singles for a 6-0, 6-0 shutout, and teamed with Boyles at No. 2 doubles for an 8-1 blowout.

Local pair powers Cougars

The University of St. Francis softball team (7-7) has gotten some solid offensive help from a couple of area newcomers. South Adams’ Carrie Nichols and Fort Recovery’s Sarah Schmitz, both freshmen, have made an instant impact for the Cougars.

Schmitz scored the game-winning run in USF’s most recent contest, a 6-5 victory over Morningside Friday, March 12. Nichols went 2-for-4 in that game.

Nichols opened the season in grand fashion, hitting a trio of home runs in the Tuscon Invitational. She had two hits in four different games out west, including a three-RBI effort in the second game of the season against 25th-ranked Walsh.

Schmitz knocked a double in an 11-1 trouncing of Judson, and added another in a 7-4 loss to No. 7 University of Mary. She also had a pair of RBIs in a 6-4 win over Jamestown.

Senior Amanda Minch, another South Adams graduate, notched a pair of RBIs against Briar Cliff.

Habegger anchors Beavers

The Bluffton College women’s track team had just six members at the Center Invitational Saturday, March 8, but led by South Adams graduate Amanda Habegger still managed to take six event championships on the way to a third-place finish. Fellow former Starfire Troy Baumer had the lone victory for the men’s team.

Habegger dominated the 400-meter hurdles, winning by one second over Fran Sikorski of St. Francis in 1-minute, 10.65 seconds. She teamed with Jana Hammer, Rita Muether and Kimleeta Davis to take first in the 4x100-meter relay in 51.95.

She was second to Julie Armstrong of Morehead State in the 100-meter hurdles by less than a 10th of a second in 16.62.

Baumer brought the men’s team its only title as he won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.28. He also ran the opening leg for the fifth-place 4x100-meter relay team, which finished in 45.00, and was 11th in the javelin with a distance of 86 feet, four inches.

Byrum throwing well

Jay County graduate Pete Byrum has thrown well in his first two games, but took a loss as the Indiana Tech baseball team has struggled to a 3-8 start.

Byrum’s lone starting effort this year resulted in a 5-3 loss in which he gave up just two earned runs. He allowed eight hits and struck out four batters in six innings against Alabama-Huntsville.

The senior also threw three innings in a 5-3 victory over Spalding. He allowed just one hit in the three scoreless frames while striking out four and walking one.

For the season he has a 2.00 ERA and eight strikeouts in nine innings.

Sprunger stays consistent

Brett Sprunger, a 2002 South Adams graduate, was solid, but it was not quite enough as the University of Indianapolis men’s golf team dropped a 329-330 decision to George Washington in Bermuda recently.

Sprunger shot a 44 on the front nine on the trip, and put up the same score on the back side.

Alberson starts hot

South Adams graduate Kyle Alberson started the 2004 baseball season on fire for the Bluffton College baseball team (3-8).

Alberson hit a pair of home runs in the fourth game of the year, a 16-15 shoot-out loss to Southern Virginia. His pair of long balls led a great team effort in which the Beavers hit a school-record six homers.

He blasted another home run as he went 2-for-4 in the second game of the year, an 8-6 win over Goshen. He also had a double in the season opener.

Alberson has cooled since the first few games, but is still hitting .257 with team highs of four home runs and 10 RBIs.[[In-content Ad]]
