Heitkamp sets record during Crusaders' streak (01/17/04)
Collegiate check-up
As if a season-long winning streak wasn’t enough, Sara Heitkamp went ahead and set a school record as well.
Heitkamp, a Fort Recovery graduate, has been the leading scorer in three of the Capital Crusaders women’s basketball team’s six straight wins. She dropped in a season-high 26 points against Muskingum Thursday while setting school records for free throws made and attempted in a single game.
She finished the 78-69 victory 17-of-19 from the foul line.
Heitkamp added team bests of three assists and four steals. She also grabbed eight rebounds.
The sophomore set her record just days after a slow scoring night against Baldwin Wallace in which she scored just six points. However, she made up for the lack of offensive pop with nine rebounds and six assists.
Heitkamp had a much better scoring day in a 90-74 victory over Mount Union Wednesday, Jan. 7. She scored all of her 17 point sin the first half, finishing 6-of-9 from the field. She also had seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Her offense was a bit off four days earlier as well, but she made the key shots in a 63-61 overtime win over Defiance. She nailed two free throws with 18 seconds left in overtime to seal the victory.
She finished that contest with nine points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Capital holds a 10-4 record and a 6-1 mark in the Ohio Athletic Conference thanks in large part to Heitkamp, who has started every game this year. She is averaging a team-best 14.5 points per game, and also leads the team in rebounds (6.7 per game), assists (57) and steals (55).
She is shooting 46 percent from the field, 37 percent on 3-pointers and 73 percent from the free throw line.
Bluffton struggling
Despite Brad Boyles’ best efforts the Bluffton Beavers’ men’s basketball team simply could not pull off a win during its last two weeks of play.
Boyles has vaulted to the top of the team scoring list for the Beavers, having posted double figures in three of the last four contests. He had his highest total with 20 points in a 72-63 loss to Manchester Wednesday, Jan. 7.
The South Adams graduate finished 7-for-11 from the field and 6-of-12 from the foul line in the game. He had three rebounds, two assists and five steals.
That effort followed a 5-of-7, 11 point night in a loss to Adrian College. He added three rebounds and an assist in that defeat.

Weaver and teammates Matt Perkins, Jeddah Weggerhoff and Ben Hewitt took first in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3-minutes, 43.46 seconds.
