Heitkamp takes No. 11 Crusaders to second round (03/04/06)

Collegiate Check-up

This time, there would be no need for a comeback.

Fort Recovery graduate Sara Heitkamp and the Capital University women’s basketball team needed three double-digit rallies to win the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament last week. No such thing was necessary Friday night as Heitkamp led the Crusaders through the first round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament 61-54 over Franklin College.

Heitkamp shot 7-of-14 for 19 points to lead Capital (27-2), which was up by 10 at the half on the way to the win. She went 3-of-5 from long distance and also had three assists, two rebounds and a steal.

The No. 11 Crusaders will play Hope College (28-1) today at 7:30 p.m. Franklin ended its season at 24-5.

The tournament victory kept a good week going for Heitkamp and the Crusaders. On Feb. 25 they rallied from a 10-point, second-half deficit to win the OAC tournament, and Tuesday Heitkamp was named OAC Player of the Year for the second straight season.

Capital trailed in the OAC title game against host Baldwin-Wallace, ranked 10th in the nation, 37-27 four minutes into the second half. But it responded with a 12-2 run to pull even and eventually won the game on a Daniele Manalac lay-up with 2.4 seconds remaining.

Heitkamp scored a game-high 12 points in the win. She led the Crusaders with eight rebounds and seven assists.

Later in the week she became just the fifth player in OAC history to win back-to-back Helen Ludwig Play of the Year honors.

Heitkamp is averaging 18.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.4 steals on the year. She owns the school’s all-time steals record and is second all-time in scoring with more than 1,700 points.
