If the pressure of preseason accolades and expectations is effecting Sara Heitkamp, she sure isn’t showing it.

After being named a preseason second-team All-American, Heitkamp, a Fort Recovery graduate has already earned a couple of honors, in the first week of her senior season at Capital. She earned the tournament MVP award for leading her Crusader women’s basketball team to the Betty Abgott Invitational in Buffalo, then was named Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her efforts as well.

Heitkamp, who finished second in the OAC in scoring and steals and third in assists as a junior, leads a Capital squad which returns all five players from a 20-6 season a year ago. She was the OAC Player of the Year in 2004-05, as well as first-team all-conference selection and an All-American. She was again named a preseason All-American by D3hoops.com this year, and her Crusaders opened the season ranked seventh in the country.

She backed up all of that hype in her first week as Capital defeated the College of New Jersey and Buffalo State in winning the Agbott tournament.

In the 60-46 championship win over Buffalo State, Heitkamp paced the Crusaders with 21 points and 16 rebounds. She also had three steals and three assists.

The senior was second on the team in scoring in the opening game with 12 points. She also had game highs with seven steals, seven assists and seven rebounds.

Abby Arnold

The 2002 graduate of Jay County has been in on four victories in the last two meets for the Ball State women’s swim team, including her second individual win of the year.

Arnold picked up her second win of the year in the same event as her first, the 50-yard freestyle. She won by 12 hundredths of a second over teammate Ashley VanOsdol, taking first in 24.78 seconds in the Cardinals’ 195-105 win over Bowling Green Oct. 11.

She was also fifth individually in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.24. She teamed with Lauren Harger, Chelsea Anderson and Meghan Patterson for third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3-minutes, 39.37 seconds.

Arnold was on a trio of winning relay teams as Ball State took first place as it hosted the five-team Doug Coers Invitational Nov. 18 and 19.

The senior captain anchored championship teams in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. She followed VanOsdol, Brittany Sayler and Addison Del Rio to finish the freestyle race in 1:39.10, and teamed with Sayler, Del Rio and Erin Johnson for a time of 1:50.13 in the medley.

Arnold also joined Sayler, Erika Paul and Michelle Huang to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:36.62. She was third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.95, and placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.74.
