Heitkamp thrills on her birthday (01/31/04)
Collegiate check-up
Usually it’s the birthday girl who gets the gifts. Instead Fort Recovery graduate Sara Heitkamp utilizing the gifts she already has.
Heitkamp used her talents to treat the Capital University women’s basketball fans to triple-double and a ridiculous 74-71 comeback win over the Wilmington Quakers on her birthday (Wednesday, Jan. 21).
Her efforts against Wilmington, and in two more wins this week which ran Capital’s winning streak to 10 games, earned her back-to-back Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.
Wilmington led by nine at halftime and blasted out to a 60-37 lead with 10:13 remaining on the clock. Perhaps Heitkamp blew out her candles and made a wish during a timeout.
Trailing by 23 points, Capital (14-4, 10-1 Ohio Athletic Conference) scored the next 18 points in a row to get back into the contest. Heitkamp buried a jumper with 38 seconds left to give the Crusaders a 72-71 lead they would not relinquish.
Heitkamp scored 25 points in the eighth victory of the current 10-game winning streak. She also had 14 rebounds and 11 steals in the first triple-double of her collegiate career.
The sophomore finished 9-of-19 from the field, which included 5-of-10 from 3-point range. She also had three assists.
Heitkamp nearly posted another triple-double in the ninth game of the streak Saturday, Jan. 24. She had 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals as Capital avenged an earlier loss against with a 73-51 victory over John Carroll.
Capital’s last defeat came Dec. 13 at John Carroll (University Heights, Ohio) by a 56-48 score.
Heitkamp also had 26 points, five assists and two steals in a 77-66 win over Heidelberg. She posted eight points, five rebounds three assists and one steals as the Crusaders ran their streak to 10 games in a 78-52 triumph over Marietta.
The 2002 graduate of Fort Recovery has become the undisputed leader for Capital. She leads the team with a 15.7 scoring average, 7.2 rebounds per game, 76 steals and 67 assists.
She ranks first in the OAC in steals (4.41 per game) and 3-point percentage (.441). She is also third in the conference in scoring and assists, and fifth in rebounding.
Habegger breaks record
South Adams graduate Amanda Habegger got her season off to a great start, setting a new school record at the Ohio Northern indoor meet Saturday, Jan. 24.
Habegger set the lone women’s record for the Bluffton Beavers, while six men’s records were also broken at the meet. She put together her record-setting effort in the 500-meter run.
She surpassed the previous mark by more than two seconds, finishing with a time of 1-minutes, 26.02 seconds.
Habegger added a time of 9.60 in the 55-meter hurdles. She also anchored Bluffton’s sixth-place 4x400-meter relay team, which finished in 4:24.39.
Fellow South Adams graduate Steph Welch (2002) placed fifth in the 1000-meter run in 3:25.62. She also tied for fifth in the high jump at a height of four minutes, 8.75 inches.
Troy Baumer, a 2001 South Adams graduate, placed fifth in the 500-meter run in 1:08.92. He also finished the 55-meter hurdles in 8.78 seconds.
Boyles leading streak
Brad Boyles, a 2000 graduate of South Adams, has the Bluffton Beaver men’s basketball team headed in the right direction.
After a five-game losing streak, Boyles has been the leading scorer for Bluffton in each of last two games of what is now a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference winning streak.
Boyles paced Bluffton with 17 points in a 58-53 victory over Anderson, and scored a team-high 16 points as the Beavers topped Defiance 75-66. Those two games, combined with a 75-67 win over Mount St. Joseph Wednesday, Jan. 21 have Bluffton up to 9-9 overall and 3-4 in the HCAC.
His best game came against Defiance as he finished 6-of-8 from the field for his game-high total. He also had five assists and four rebounds.
The senior was nearly as impressive from the field against Anderson, hitting 7-of-10. He also had two rebounds in the victory over the Ravens.
Boyles finished one point shy of teammate Bryan Yelley against MSJ, scoring 19 points on 6-of-10 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. He had four rebounds and four assists as well.
He also led the Beavers in a 92-63 loss against Transylvania Saturday, Jan. 17 with 17 points, five rebounds, one block and one steal.
Boyles has started every game for Bluffton this year and leads the team with 15.6 points per game and a .642 field goal mark. He is second on the team with 15 steals.
He averages 3.5 rebounds per game, and has dished out 36 assists.
Link still rebounding
Kristina Link, a 2003 Jay County graduate, is continuing to see minutes for the Tri-State University women’s basketball team
Link had her best recent game Saturday, Jan. 24 in a 67-64 loss to St. Mary’s. She finished with six points and seven rebounds in the contest.
The freshman also had six points, four rebounds, one assist and two blocks in a loss to Hope, and three points, three rebounds and one assist in a victory over Olivet.
Link ranks second on the team in rebounding with 6.4 boards per game. She also averages 5.4 points per game.
Bihn returns
After not being part of the team for much of the season, Chuck Bihn has returned for the Capital Crusaders.
Working his way back into playing shape for the men’s basketball team, Bihn had his best game in Wednesday’s 84-62 victory over Marietta. He scored 10 points and had five rebounds in 18 minutes of play.
He finished 5-of-6 from the field, and also had one assist, two blocks and three steals.
Bihn also reached double figures with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting in an 82-62 win over Wilmington. He added five rebounds in that contest.
He added five points and five rebounds in a loss to John Carroll, and had three points, two rebounds and two assists in a win over Heidelberg.
In the seven games since his return Bihn is averaging 6.1 points in 15.1 minutes of play. He is shooting 65 percent from the field and averaging 4.6 rebounds per game.
Weaver wins one
Jay County graduate Kyle Weaver helped the Wabash men’s swim team to a good start Saturday, Jan. 17, but the Little Giants still took a 116-89 loss to Washington University (St. Louis).
Weaver teamed with Matt Perkins, Colin Fahey and Stephen Birrer to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1-minute, 40.43 seconds.[[In-content Ad]]
