Hewitt forces OT in Starfires' victory (08/29/2008)

Local roundup

GARRETT - Perhaps Abbey Hewitt should have been on the field sooner.

Hewitt got on the field for the South Adams High School girls soccer team with less than two minutes remaining in Thursday's game and scored the game-tying goal with 1:12 on the clock. The tally forced overtime, and the Starfires took advantage for a 3-2 win over the Garrett Railroaders in Allen County Athletic Conference action.

The Starfires (4-0, 1-0 ACAC) trailed 2-0 at halftime, and Maddie Moore scored two minutes into the second half to cut that deficit in half. The score remained 2-1 until Hewitt played the hero with her goal off a Chelsey Roop corner kick.

The game-winning goal in the first of two 14-minute overtime periods also came off a corner kick as Moore assisted Ashton Morgan.

Tribe gridders fall

DELPHOS - Fort Recovery's middle school football teams managed just one touchdown in a pair of games Thursday against host St. John's. The Indian seventh graders lost 34-6 to the Blue Jays while the eighth grade team fell 42-0.

The lone score for Fort Recovery's seventh grade team came in the third quarter when Ben Dilworth tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Alex Kaiser.

SA spikers fall to No. 6

BERNE - The home-court advantage had little affect for the South Adams volleyball team (0-9) as it fell 25-10, 25-10, 25-8 Thursday to the Class 3A No. 6 Bellmont Squaws.

Jacie Yoder finished with eight digs.
