High Rollers advance again (02/14/05)

Local Roundup

ANDERSON — Jay County couldn’t quite match its regional success from a year ago, but still had enough to earn another week of competition.

The defending regional champion High Rollers boys bowling team placed third at the Anderson regional Saturday to move on to this week’s Lafayette semi-state. The top six teams earned semi-state berths.

Cody Wright advanced to the individual state finals, and the girls team ended its season with an eighth-place finish.

Jay County got off to a slow start with a 920 in its first game, but surged to third place with a 973 in game two. But, it lost a head-to-head match against conference rival and eventual champion Huntington North to finish in third place overall.

Wright, who finished fifth in the state last year, qualified for a return trip to the state meet as he rolled a 665 to finish eighth in a 51-bowler field. He opened the day with games of 269 and 246 before ending with a 150.

The girls team scored a two-game team record score of 1,639 thanks to a single-game team record 840 in their second game. It was in sixth place at that point, but slipped to eighth to end the season.

Klopp leads Jay

FORT WAYNE — Justin Kloop led a day which included 101 personal-best times for the Jay County Winter Swim team as it competed at the 2005 Polar Bear Plunge at Fort Wayne Southside this weekend.

Klopp dominated the 13-14-year-old boys division, winning seven out of his 10 events. He won the 200-yard individual medley, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. He was also second twice and sixth once.

He teamed with Sam Miller, Perry Hull and Aaron Hudson to win the 200 medley relay.

Miller added a pair of second-place efforts in the 100 breaststroke and 400 individual medley, and Hudson was third in the 200 butterfly.

Levi Hummel took third in the 8-and-younger 25 butterfly.

Cori Vormohr topped the list on the girls side, placing second in the 13-14-year-old 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and third in the 100 breaststroke. Her sister, Annie Vormohr, was third in the 8-and-younger 100 individual medley.

Emilee Miller placed third in the 9-10-year-old girls 100 breaststroke.
