Homan, Ainsworth take first at Marion (12/10/07)

MARION - Two Jay County High School gymnasts teamed for the top finish Saturday as the Patriots opened their season in a pairs meet hosted by Marion.

Senior Kendra Homan and freshman Kristen Ainsworth won the competition with an all-around total of 30 points, 0.8 ahead of Morgan Schoer and Shey Harris of the host Giants. Jenny Buckland and Melynda Brackman of JCHS were third at 29.1.

Patriot gymnasts had the top score in three of the four events, with Erika Hunt and Ainsworth each leading one-two efforts.

Ainsworth was first on the floor exercise with an 8.5, and Hunt placed second at 8.2. Hunt won the vault at 8.5 with Kendra Homan adding an 8.7 as the runner-up.

Buckland had the top Jay County effort on the balance beam (first - 7.7) and uneven bars (second - 7.3).

Freshman boys 0-2

MARION - Jay County's freshman boys basketball team dropped both of its games in tournament action at Marion. It lost 28-27 to Benton Central and 56-18 against the host Giants.

Garrett Krieg was the only Patriot to reach double figures in either game, finishing with 10 points against Benton Central. Drew Houck added seven points, and Zach Cash scored six.

Krieg also had a team-high of five points in the loss to Marion. Houck added four points, and Austin Mann and Dusty Rodgers each scored three.

Chiefs win pair

Both East Jay Middle School girls basketball teams clobbered the Bluffton Tigers Thursday, the seventh graders by a 42-7 final and the eighth grade team 40-13.

Mariah Hornaday scored 13 points for the eighth graders (2-0), who led 10-2 after the opening period and held Bluffton scoreless in the second. Danielle Wellman scored nine points, and LeAnn Horn, Kassi Hemmelgarn, Randa Gillespie and Maria Murphy each added four.

The seventh grade squad, also, 2-0, led 16-5 at the half and shut out the Tigers in the third quarter. Makayla Jobe paced the Chiefs with 12 points, Lexie Gierhart had nine and Rachelle Jackson finished with eight.[[In-content Ad]]
