Houck leads Jay girls over Arabians

PENDLETON — The Patriots won the battle of defending sectional champions.
A strong effort in the hurdle events Tuesday led the Jay County High School girls track team to victory with 99 points at a four-team meet hosted by Pendleton Heights.
The host Arabians, who have won back-to-back sectional titles on their home track, were second with 85.5 points followed by New Castle (37.5) and Muncie Southside (19).
Malarie Houck won a pair of events to lead the Patriots, who are the three-time defending sectional champions at Southside. She was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.86 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 50.44 with teammate Andrea Bruggeman second in both events.
JCHS also went one-two in the 400 dash with Amber Huelskamp winning in 1:02.28 ahead of Morgan Brown. Abigail Johnson was first in the 800 run, Sara Lennartz won the discus and Ciera Barcus took the high jump.

Baseball beats Jets
Jay County fell behind 1-0, but controlled the rest of the game Tuesday for a 9-3 victory over the visiting Anderson Preparatory Academy Jets.
Keenan James hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Patriots, who took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. JCHS (8-7) added two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Kyle Selvey finished 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and a run, and Landry Inman had two hits and two runs.
Tanner Reynolds earned the win, limiting APA to two runs — one earned — on three hits and two walk in 4 1/3 innings.
Landry Inman, Chaz Carroll and Ravi Patel held the Jets without an earned run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

’Cats top girls tennis
 MUNCIE — The Patriots struggled to keep up with the Muncie Central Bearcats on Tuesday in a 5-0 defeat.
Jay County (1-5) dropped the first set in all three singles matches 6-0 as the Bearcats took control. Miranda Reinhart fell 6-1, 6-0 to Ada Kirby at No. 1 singles, Brooke Fraley lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 and Avery Lloyd suffered a shutout defeat at No. 2.
Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes won five of the Patriots’ nine games in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Haley Osborne and Mikaela Haller at No. 2 doubles. Sydney Bost and Shawna Miller fell 6-1, 6-0 against Maggie Byrnes and Samantha Bartholome at No. 1 doubles.
JCHS lost the junior varsity match 7-1 with the lone win coming from Jessica Kerrigan at No. 2 singles.

JV baseball loses
YORKTOWN — Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team jumped out to a quick lead Tuesday only to fall 5-2 to the Yorktown Tigers.
The Patriots scored twice in the top of the first inning, but got shut out the rest of the way. Yorktown pulled even with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and took the lead for good with two more in the fourth.
Chandler Jacks suffered the loss, giving up five runs on five hits and five walks in six innings. He struck out eight batters.
Lucas Hendee led the Patriot offense with a double, a run and an RBI. Austin Beasley also had a hit, a run and an RBI, and Levi Stant finished 2-for-3.[[In-content Ad]]
