Hummel leads Rose to first 2-0 start since 1987 (09/27/03)

Collegiate Check-up

And you thought Cameron Hummel’s first college game was good.

The 2003 Jay County graduate and current Rose-Hulman graduate only outdid himself in his first game in front of the home crowd in Terre Haute Sept. 13. He contributed to three touchdowns as the Engineers went to 2-0 for the first time since 1987 with a 24-23 victory over the University of the South (Sewanee).

Hummel also helped coach Ted Karras to be the first coach to win his first two games at Rose-Hulman since Heze Clark in 1923.

He didn’t waste much time before wowing the home fans, scoring on a 49-yard touchdown run less than two minutes into the game. He added a 6-yard touchdown pass to running back Charlie Key as the Engineers built a 17-0 first-quarter lead.

Sewanee scored the next 20 points a row before Hummel put his team on top for good. He found Clint Hammes on a 3-yard scoring pass with four seconds to go in the third quarter for what would be the winning touchdown.

Hummel was impressive through the air, going 19-of-33 for 226 yards. He was also the No. 2 rusher behind Key, carrying 13 times for 90 yards.

Wheaten finally gave Hummel his first problems of the season in his third game Sept. 20.

He finished just 6-of-24 for 66 yards in the 29-10 loss to the fourth-ranked Thunder. There wasn’t much protection for him as he was sacked five times.

Michael tops HCAC

To say Libby Michael is having a good year in her third season with the Anderson volleyball team would be an understatement.

The former Jay County Patriot is not only among the most important players on the 11-3 Ravens squad, but she is also the best in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in what she does. She currently leads the HCAC with 283 digs for an average of 5.34 digs per game.

In her most recent action, the junior racked up 24 digs as Anderson won its conference opener 30-17, 30-23, 30-28 over Manchester Tuesday. The win improved the Ravens to 14-4 overall.

She also had 59 digs as Anderson hosted the three-match Anderson Quad, and added 55 digs at the Centre Invitational.

Steiner tackling big

South Adams graduate Scott Steiner is right back where he was at the end of last season. He’s one of the leading tacklers for the Bluffton College football team.

Steiner was second on the team in tackling in Bluffton’s most recent game, a 35-7 loss to Thiel College. He had nine tackles in the contest, two of which were for a loss.

He also had a pair of tackles as the Beavers defeated Hiram in their season opener 35-20.

Smith 2nd at invite

Erin Smith, a 2001 Jay County graduate, had an outstanding weekend of golf at the Anderson University Invitational recently.

The Raven junior finished second overall at the five-team event, scoring an 81 during her first round and an 83 in her second. She led the team to a second-place finish behind Manchester.

Smith also shot two rounds of 88 at the Hanover Fall Invitational, finishing eighth overall as Anderson placed third.

Conrad 3rd on team

Former South Adams runner Christy Conrad continues to be one of the top scorers for the Taylor University cross country team.

In her only race thus far this season, Conrad finished third on the team and 65th overall at the Indiana State University Invitational. She ran a time of 21:19 as Taylor placed 10th in the event.

Fulkerson gets a few

There wasn’t much yardage to be had in Tri-State’s 63-0 loss to Wisconsin Stevens Point, but Jay County graduate Paul Fulkerson got some of it.

He carried the ball six times for eight yards in the defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
