Trisha Champ shot her best round at Portland Golf Cub. Jennifer Hunt posted her best score ever.

The effort from Jay County's top two girls golfers was more than enough Monday to lead the Patriots to a 199-242 victory over the visiting South Adams Starfires.

"We're doing really well," said Champ after JCHS improved to 3-1 on the season. "We've gotten a lot better. ... We always have someone coming out and shooting their personal best."

Monday it was Hunt who put together her record round.

The junior got off to a solid start despite knocking her second shot on the first hole at PGC well to the right and behind a tree. Her club clipped through the leaves on the third shot, but she still managed to get it on the green and two-putt for a bogey.

Hunt added a second bogey on the 414-yard, par-4 fifth hole and immediately followed with the lone par of her round on the 471-yard, par-5 sixth on the way to a total of 50.

"She shot a personal best and still wasn't happy tonight," said Patriot coach Tom Ferguson. "That's a positive.

"I think the biggest thing Jennifer is doing right right now is her attitude. She's finally starting to see that she's capable of shooting better numbers."

Ferguson pointed to last week's match at Richmond in which Hunt played with Champ and a pair of Red Devils, all three of whom shot 40 or better.

"Other than two bad holes, she played right with those kids," Ferguson said. "Her confidence is coming up, so that's really good for her."

The Patriots' third straight round of 199 or better gave them three wins in their first four matches. At this point last season they were 1-3, and the team broke 200 during dual meets just four times in all of 2006.

Champ played a consistent round, racking up seven pars with two bogeys in between for her 2-over-par tally. It was her best score at PGC, and her second best to par overall.

She shot a 1-over-par 37 last season at Hickory Hills Golf Club.

Champ's best stretch came with four consecutive pars, wrapping up on the sixth hole.

The junior hit a laser drive down the left edge of the fairway, but her second shot found the bunker on the far side of the green. Her bunker shot, for eagle, whacked the flagstick but continued on past the hole and she two-putted for the par.

After a bogey on seventh hole Champ finished off her season-best round with back-to-back pars, just missing a birdie putt on No. 9.

"I played pretty well," said Champ after posting her second straight sub-40 round. "I didn't do anything great, but I hit the greens and I didn't three-putt or four-putt.

"I just need to get some putts to fall and hit it a little bit closer. I still haven't played my best yet. I come off feeling like I (could have done better)."

Champ's counterpart, South Adams No. 1 player Alyssa Neuenschwander, also shot a personal-best round.

She posted pars on the fourth, seventh and eighth holes for a 46. Prior to Monday she had never broken 50.

Ivy Simons and Cara Garringer followed Champ and Hunt for the Patriots with scores of 55 and 57 respectively. Simons turned in a par on the 414-yard, par-4 fifth hole, and Garringer had a pair of bogeys to finish with her 57.

Rachel Osterholt and Brittany Schlater each shot 59.

"I think as a team we definitely need to get more consistent," said Ferguson of his No. 3 through six players. "They're all capable of shooting in the 40s."

South Adams couldn't stay close as there was an 18-stroke gap between Neuenschwander and the No. 2 scorer for the Starfires.

Tricia Crider was second on the team with a 62, and Kara Lehman shot 64. Sarah Muselman rounded out the team score with a 69, Grace Dobler finished at 70 and Jansen Yoder had a 79.

Junior varsity

Jay County's junior varsity group topped the Starfire varsity score as well, finishing with a 230. South Adams did not have a JV team.

Abbey Denney and Macey Gerber paced the Patriot effort with scores of 53 and 54 respectively.

Alex Bunch was next with a 60, Anneliese Jetmore finished at 63 and Amy Nichols shot 67.[[In-content Ad]]
